Not talking, should we be worried?

OK, so I know I shouldnt compare but....DS started talking at 9 months (has'nt stopped since (is now 6yrs) DD is 20 months she has 4 or 5 chinese words and "mama, dada, brother & nank u = thank you & please". I cant help but start to have some concerns.

I know the argument for the fact that she can make herself understood by pointing, and dragging you to what she wants but what about words?

Really when should I start to worry, or more productively do something about it....oh and what can we do, where do we start?

We have started reading more to her in the last few weeks, I point at things and give them names, ask her if she can name them? Sometimes she will try and will make a sound that is vaguely like what I have said but, with no real results.

She is clear on understanding everything "Pick up your purple shoes and put them by the door please" ...no problems taking instruction.

I am sure many have asked but I cant find anything when I search. Any feedback or links of things to read would be really really appreciated. Thanks

As cara says, it very much varies. Our #1 said only single words until 24 months, then 2-word stage for a few months, then the floodgates opened. Our #2 was a few months earlier. Their cousin was a good 9 months later and still doesn't articulate clearly. He's almost four. All normal.

Hi Cara, axptguy38

Thanks for your replies, I will continue to take deep breathes, talk lots with her and encourage any sounds she makes....

DS advanced through everything so early and at this age he was well into conversations, so as much as I try really really hard not to compare sometimes its challenging not to.

At the end of the day her normal is different to his and that's ok, I just wondered if I should be concerned from an actual "medical" point of view.

What motivated me to post was receiving an update on 20month old's development progress from a UK kids website to which we subscribe. It talked about the fact a 20 month old likely has a vocab of up to 200 words, and on average will learn up to 10 words a day for the next few months.

Reading that gave me a fright as our DD is clearly far from such "averages".

Thanks again

As the great Dr. Spock said "We can talk about average children as long as you understand that no child is average." There is a bell curve and some kids are way off in one direction or another. Perfectly normal.

Just because she doesn't speak doesn't mean she doesn't understand.

As cara says, don't pressure. Encourage and praise but don't pressure.

Your child probably knows more than 200 words, it's just that she's not saying them (yet).

My child was the same. I was getting worried because her friend could speak so well at 18 months onwards and my 20 month old girl could not. Then a month later, she surprised me by talking. I thought I was talking to a brick wall when I named everything I saw while shopping but at 21 months, she REPEATED all the words I had used since birth. I almost cried. There I was thinking she didn't understand a thing because she was not talking to me but at 21 months, she showed me how wrong I was. I'd say give her another half a year also.

According to my mother in law, my wife said almost nothing until the age of two, instead using signs to communicate what she wanted. Then at around two she suddenly started speaking in complete sentences.

My colleague said friends had a daughter who was nearly three and not talking and they were about to get professional help when one day, she also just started spouting out complete sentences!

Anyway, my pedaetrician says to not worry about vocab until about the age of 2, and if they're still not saying much, then you can start to look into it.

Keep in mind that bilingual kids speak later because they have much more information to process.

My daughter just turned 2. She speaks loads, in Canto and English, but at 20 months she wasn't saying hardly anything. Just lots of baby babble.

Well, by all accounts Einstein was a mediocre student. Interesting that...
