I’m trying to gauge interest in a new monthly book group. Ideally I’m looking for serious readers, but not serious people, to have a discussion of the book over coffee or a drink, probably Sunday afternoon. I’m hoping that, while still informal, the focus would be on the book itself, rather than the looser, casual, wine+socialising type of book group. Both men and women welcome. My previous book group in Seoul read the following books:
The Outsider- Camus
The Waves- Virginia Woolf
Master & Margarita- Bulgakov
The Elementary Particles- Houellebecq
Blindness- Jose Saramago
White Noise- Don Delillo
I Married a Communist-Philip Roth
The Baron in the Trees- Calvino
Cousin Bette- Balzac
The Bostonians- Henry James
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter- Carson McCullers
Winesburg, Ohio- Sherwood Anderson
An eclectic mix. While the last thing I want is for discussions to be pretentious or highbrow, I don’t envisage Richard & Judy or Oprah Book Club-type books on there either. I wouldn’t mind reading some Asian texts in translation. Please get in touch in any of this interests you.

Great! Another 2 or 3 people are already in so we could agree a book here and arrange the first meeting for maybe Sunday 24th or 31st October- would that work? In Seoul we took turns to choose the book but tried if possible to make it one that no-one had read before. Any suggestions as to what could be the first one? I'll think too and tell the others and try to come up with something.

How about we create an AsiaXPAT book club - we can create a small ad and link it to this forum... you can keep people updated by posting meetings here...

what about 'Confessions of a Mask' by Yukio Mishima for our inaugural text? I just chose it randomly from an Internet list of modern literature and thought it sounded interesting. Any other suggestions welcome.
Hope the moves are going smoothly for you guys; look forward to meeting you at some point.
