My family are Australian and we are moving from the states in October. We are currently on a look-see and have been very impressed with the schools but the accommodation we are a little overwhelmed as to where to live. We really liked stanley or repulse bay or sai Kung. We would love to hear as to where other expats live. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, expats live in all those places. ;) Jokes aside, I suggest you read through some old threads to start.

Sai Kung is really another world compared to Repulse Bay or Stanley. Further away but less costly, and more "nature". Having said that there's plenty of nature around the corner from Stanley and Repulse Bay, with the huge Tai Tam country park only minutes away. You could also look at Red Hill, Shouson Hill and Pok Fu Lam. More urban "expat areas" are for example Midlevels and Happy Valley. There's also The Peak.

Personally, we live in Repulse Bay and we love it. However it is one of the more expensive places to live. We could afford more somewhere else.

One decision you will need to make, and this is as important as location itself, is whether you want to live in a larger building with facilities (and pay more for that), a smaller building with fewer or no facilities, or something in between.. Many new arrivals find a building with facilities easier to start. However some people aren't into the "huge complex" thing. Living in a megacomplex like Repulse Bay 101/109 or Bel-Air is very different from living in a lowrise.

you owe it to yourself to look at Discovery Bay as well, if only for the novelty factor (some call it "stepford" or 'wallyworld' due to it's more resort-style layout and ambience,) but it IS full of expats, and is one of the easier places to find your feet when you move here. lots of kids travel to schools all over hk from DB as well.

You didn't mention much about your family... such as any kids? If so, what age?

If they are school age, then maybe you want to start your search based around where you will send the kids to school - in case you don't want them to travel far for school.

If you're kids are toddlers, then maybe you'd like to opt for an apartment complex that has clubhouse facilities and a podium area - where kiddies congregate and it's easy to befriend other parents.

I like the South Side because the air is slightly better than the rest of Hong Kong (same applies to Clearwater Bay and Sai Kung - but I find these places a bit far away). South Side means Stanley, Replulse Bay... perhaps even as far as Ap Lei Chau...

Park Island is popular with Aussies. Sea views all round, easy access to beach and 20 minustes from Central.
