Aquino: Letter From Hong Kong 'Insulting'

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by Ed 15 yrs ago
Benigno Aquino III continued Thursday to stir up controversy over the Aug. 23 bus hostage crisis in Manila by criticizing a letter he received from Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang, calling it “insulting,” the English-language South China Morning Post reported.

The Philippine president said in a televised interview with Philippine media he had received a letter in which “we were being told, in very minute detail, what we were supposed to do.”

Though Aquino declined to specify who had written the letter, Tsang’s office confirmed with the SCMP that the chief executive wrote to Aquino on Aug. 26 “in a respectful and polite manner” expressing his wishes that an “independent, professional and comprehensive investigation” be conducted.

Aquino said that he would not respond to the letter and that he had conveyed his feelings to the Chinese government in Beijing, which is officially responsible for the foreign affairs of Hong Kong, a special administrative region.

Not sure what the surprise is here.

Why would the democratically elected president of 90 million people listen to what the un-democratically elected chief executive who has effective control over nobody had to say to him ?

Another slap in the face to the people of Hong Kong. So he thinks Donald is not worthy of addressing him, only the likes of Hu Jintao or President Obama are worthy of his attention. Incompetence on the World Stage being fully displayed with this clown.

absolutely...what leader of a nation would receive calls from someone who is in essence 'the mayor' of a medium sized asian city, whether it's "asia's world city' or not....

The Phils President Aquino is trying his best to show that he's not a push over. Morale is low in the Phils... as a leader embarrassed with this botched hostage rescue event. He has to show his nation that it's only one event and that the nation should look forward to a better Phils and learn from this.

It's no secret that he inherited a worn down country sucked dry by the previous administration.

@ grytch...

Everyone has their right to freedom of expression. However, The President of the Phils is not a private citizen. He's in a stage where the WORLD is watching. He or his cabinet members has to identify that. THE WORLD IS WATCHING. Yes, it's only one smile... but that particular expression iritates a nation of 8 million + 1.3 Billion Hong Hong ang China citizen...

He's playing ignorant, and he's doing a good job of lowering the image of Filipino's by saying "It's a cultural difference"

WHat do you Hong Kong citizens will do if Mr Donald Tsang was seen smiling about this hostage situation?

here's an email from a LA tourist to HK: cheers!

To the Hongkong and PRC Peoples,

You hate the Filipino people for the hostage fiasco- that unfortunate incident that went out of control at the end. This was a hostage situation that was under control and which netted 7 Chinese tourists to be released upon the efforts of the local policemen.

You appear and sound sanctimonious and have even stepped upon their sovereignty. You have demanded apology, the moon and the heavens. You hate the Filipino people as if they wanted this unfortunate incident to happen. First and foremost, they've offered their condolences to the families of the 8 that were killed in this incident. Secondly, they were sorry for the bungled handling of this hostage taking. It was unfortunate, it was an accident, they never planned it that way to happen. Is it fair to blame a whole nation for a situation that was never planned?

Let me ask you this question, "Should the Filipinos hate you also for the lead poisoning caused by the paint you used in your baby furniture and toys for the children of the world, Should they hate you also for the use of cardboards in the "dimsums" that you sell to tourists? Should they hate you also for the melamine contamination wherein not 8, but hundreds, maybe even thousands have suffered and some even died?

Or, let us talk of Filipino casualties. A few years ago, 3 Filipino tourists, all surnamed Madrigal, a family of 5 were walking on Tianamen Square and Beijing. One mentally derained local Chinese stabbed the father and two of his children, killing all three. Were you even sorry for what this moron Chinese did? Did the Filipino people even demanded that China apologize for this unfortunate incident. This was PRE-MEDITATED MURDER and your government never even lifted a finger to apologize to the family of the victims!

Last year, the idiot and psycho Chinese local threw deadly acid in plastic bags in Mongkok where several locals and another group of Filipino tourists got third degree burns - including small children - while shopping there.

Just as the use of lead, cardboard, melamine, were pre-meditated - used because they were cheaper materials, in order to generate PROFITS for the Chinese businessman. Did you pay damages the same way you are demanding damages from the Filipino nation and people.

Where was the anger of the Chinese and Hongkong people? Did you even apologize to the world? My God in the case of melanine, you even kept this information from the world, until you were exposed for what you are!!!

Enough! We symphatize but don't blame the Filipino people. "Asia's world city?" MY ASS! I guess it's "Asia's RACIST city" would be a better term because you think you are better than all the people in Asia! Every nation has its own DEVIL - and HK is not an excuse.

Wake up and examine yourselves in front of the mirror and see for yourselves if you are truly worth the RESPECT of the world and deserves to be called "Asia's world city". If you don't, then this will be the start of your decline.

The Philippines may be poor and lack all the conveniences in this materialistic world, or swarmed by shortcomings of its corrupt leadership - BUT the Filipinos are more civilized than many RACISTS and OBNOXIOUS Chinese in this part of the world.

So you want to send our OFWs home, that take care of your children? They play an important part in your lives. Both spouses are able to work, earn money because of the tender loving care being heaped on your children by Filipino maids and yayas/amahs. While you pay our OFWs for the work they do, you earn more for the love and care they bestow on your children. Go ahead, send our OFWs home. Let us see how that will affect your family incomes.

Enough!

Wow that LA tourist is something... typical narrow minded feeling victim Flipino living abroad syndrom.

Anyway... one persons letter doesn't represent a nation.

that person doesn't know what "random act of violence" means

Although that crazy hostage taker choose a bus in random with Hong Kong chinese tourist inside it. The reaction of the Philippine goverment and police was not. It was played worldwide and everyone saw how poorly prepared, equipt and how the leadership lost all common sense in handling this situation hence the word Bungled"

I love it when people create excuses to the nth degree... That's one of the main reason why there is no progress. Excuses left and right... and from the citizens itself...

and consider themselves "educated"

@ SadSack.... I agree with you.

It was not the incident which resulted in criticism, but the succession of follies after the incident that created the poor image of Philippines. Hostage taking happens everywhere, Yes.

If I was a hostage... I wouldn't want to be in Russia (you know what happens to hostages there) I wouldn't want to be in Philippines either.

It is a duty and responsibility of every president or leader of each country to protect their people. It is important that a leader or a president to be smart or intelligent enough to do his duties. Both parties did whatever they think is right. If Obama is the President of the Philippines he would responded or acted differently same with Hong Kong. I didnt see anything wrong with what D.Tsang did. He's the appointed leader of Hong Kong, he have to do his duties. On the other hand Pres. Benigno Aquino did whatever he thinks is right, it his judgement call. Although you cant hide the facts that the "Manila Hostage" failed or unsuccessful. The Philippine government is doing an investigation to find out what had really happened there inside the bus. The PNP admitted their mistakes and apologize. The sad truth is no matter what is the result of the investigation, it wont bring back the life of those 8 chinese people who died.

To: LiveLeavehkg;

By the way grytch is right about Aquino's face

To: Sad Sack;

Moron is a very very very bad words which I always said to my daughter. You dont want people calling you that if you did a mistakes.

Peace to all, I been oppressed by a lot of Chinese people here in Hong Kong based on my nationality, but I dont judge or generalized all of them. Because I have a lot of good chinese friends and even stuff too.

So if grytch is right are you covering up for Pres Aquino's smiles and Smirks? I mean... Is this permanent in his face? no, right? I've seen his serious face... So therefore he should be aware to use that serious face at the moment of national crisis dont you think? dont make excuses on his behalf...

Answer my question: If Mr Donald Tsang is seen smiling during this situation and let's say he had the same facial operation/ condition as with Aquino. How do you think the Hong Kong people will react to his smiles and smirks?

Yes it is true what grytch and babeybibobu said about Aquino's face, but it is wrong to judge a person based on a smile. So what are you trying to imply is Aquino was basically very happy and glad to what had happend to Chinese people? That he doesnt care and even feel sad about it? Cammon, he's a human being who also feel the same thing that you and I feel about the "Manila Hostage" which is sadness. If you've seen what he's wearing during the interview he's wearing a black shirt and a small black pin which signify his condolence to the victims. By the way, the Aquino's have chinese blood (Joke!) :-)

This is one example which clearly shows that BA is not ready to take to the world stage. Any self respecting politician or leader would have had the grace and decorum to furnish a reply to Donald’s letter despite how loathed he was with the contents therein.

No wonder the bus siege ended up with such catastrophic results with this clown in charge.

I likened Tsang's reponse to that of a father losing 8 of his children in tragic circumstances."

And a Canadian TV station likened his comments to those of "Donald Tsang the tour operator"

He might have gained some short term popularity in HK by playing international politics with that tragedy. However, he also exposed the fact that he doesn't have any influence or position in the mentioned field.

It's a healthy reminder to HK citizens that you are NOT represented by HK Government (civil cervants of Hu Jintao) abroad but by Beijing.

grytch,

so you think it was good manners just to ignore DT's letter?

Perhaps that's the way he was brought up seeing as he ignored DT's phone calls at the height of the hostage crisis.

Whichever way you see it, heads of state don't behave like this and for him to do so reflects a poor image of his country as a whole.

grytch,

speaking of protocols, how many protocols have the PNP or coroners broken when investigating the siege?

What do you think: would Michael Bloomberg write a letter to Dmitry Medvedev, Angela Merkel or Hu Jintao or would he leave this to Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?

I'm sure they would be courteous enough to furnish a reply in any respect.

And the fact remains DT is still the head of HK despite HK's sovereignity belonging to PRC. BA is making a mockery of this and trying to deflect the a bad situation of his own doing.

So the Philippines leaders continue to pass the buck. Looking at protocols when good sense should have prevailed. Take the call, answer the letter - it was the right thing to do.

Looking to send in a local police force when better trained and better equiped police teams stand by twiddling their thumbs. Know when to step back and let the experts take over instead of stubbornly protecting your turf - still have not learned that lesson.

Not well equipped? - what, can't afford some ladders to get into the bus quickly through the windows?

Promise his job back and then when he surrenders, arrest him. A promise made under duress is not a promise made. Dah! No wonder the Philippines is such a state of affairs.

After that they still mess up by approving and then stopping the HK delegation from bringing back evidence, sending celphones erroneously to HK and having to ask for it back. I agree, they may not be morons but their actions are sure moronic.

Nope, they don't practise such courtesy - the only possibility would be private correspondence (in case they were in good terms personally) but we wouldn't learn about it.

"And the fact remains DT is still the head of HK "

Head of the administration of Special Administrative Region, it is. Actually he knows his position very well but probably doesn't want HK people to realize it.

Once again - PRC Government in Beijing is responsible for China's (including HK and Macau) foreign relations. Everything else is just illusion

"Hong Kong is a special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Under the Basic Law of Hong Kong, its diplomatic relations and defence are the responsibility of the Central People's Government of the PRC. Nonetheless, Hong Kong has retained considerable autonomy in all other aspects, including economic and commercial relations, customs control"

The moron is the "head of state" who calls another head of state without going through the proper channels. There are protocols to be followed if you want to talk to any head of state regardless of which nation you are representing.

Duh

Protocol - there was a team of pros they could have called instead of the so called SWAT that they did call.

Well he didn't ignore it did he. If he wanted to slap the Donald publically, call him out and leave aside the innuendo.

But boy-boy couldn't let his ego take a siesta.
