desk top shutting down randomly and unexpectedly

It does sound like heat is a possible culprit. Most computers have "self-defense" mechanisms which shut down the system in case of fan malfunction or excessive heat.

Crack open the case and check if the fans are clean and spin freely. Very gently use a soft brush to clean them. Also clean the rest of it. You can also carefully use a vacuum. It doesn't need to be pristine, but dust does clog things up. Apart from the fans, dust can in rare cases cause short circuits.

If you are careful the risk of damaging anything is pretty much nonexistent. Some people recommend "Air Cleaner" compressed air cans but there is a certain risk of damage so if you're not an expert avoid that for the inside of the system.

I would leave the reinserting of RAM and such to the experts. It sounds easy to us but for someone without experience there are risks.

If all that doesn't help, take the computer (leave the monitor and keyboard/mouse at home) to an expert. Match Power in the Wan Chai Computer Centre are good.

If you actually mean the desktop and not the whole computer, then the same happened to me. I found out that my Trend Micro Pro (virus protection) was taking over and not allowing access to the desktop for some silly reason. I had to uninstall and then reinstall using Trend Micro software from their disk and everything is fine.

I assume one of those silly software bugs that showed up, but it works fine now.

If none of this applies to you, then sorry for wasting your time :)

Most aircons have a dehumidify setting.

We leave ours on 24/7 in the Shanghai summer. Set at 26 degrees. It keeps everything in the basement dry, and set at 26 degrees it is not running all the time. And so not too expensive.

Sometimes it's actually just bad ram. A friend of mine had this problem, and they replaced the ram, and now it's working perfectly.
