storing stuff in humid climate

ORIGINAL POST

I know it can sound like a simple and silly question, but I am not used to this kind of climate, this very high humidity.

We have had some little cases of mildew notwithstanding the a/c and the dehumidifiers.

I was wondering now what is the best way to store stuff, like clothes or others (papers, toys....)? In plastic boxes or cardboard boxes?

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Apart from dehumidifiers, you need the dehumidifying "tubs" in every drawer and cupboard. You can buy them at the supermarket. Change them when they become full of water.

That will solve the problem.

Thanks axptguy38. We also have those in all drawers and closets and change them when needed.

I was wondering whether it would be better plastic boxes or cardboard boxes to store things in closets (as I mentioned, old clothes, toys, other fabric things, papers....).

Many thanks.

for long-term storage of clothes, we put one or two of the little dehumidifier packets (also at the supermarket) in with the clothes, and then into those large plastic zipper bags that you then vacuum all the air out of, compressing said clothes/jackets/blankets into a MUCH smaller package...never had a problem. (the MAGIC brand seems to hold it's seal very well...we found them at Taste)

As funbobby says. Also, you can get plastic storage boxes at Japan Home. They are not entirely sealed, but enough that the dehumidifying packets have no problem keeping up.

Actually humidity poses problems here only in spring and summer.

More problems in spring and summer yes, but it is pretty humid year round.
