Percentage of income for rent

Our family is moving to HK in early 2011 for an indefinite time period (at least 2 years though). We are looking for a 3 BR place to rent as we have two children (ages 3 and 5), but would like to be near my office in Central (possibly as far as Pok Fu Lam or Happy Valley, but otherwise close by) for our initial 2 years there. What percentage of income would be normal for an expat to spend on rent in HK? We will also have international school fees to pay.

"It depends" I guess. For starters there are many expats with paid housing, wholly or in part. In our case, we pay over 40% of gross monthly income in rent and we pay school fees too. We have a three bedroom. Don't know if all that is "normal".

I would note that HK Island is rather small, so "close by" Central could include most of South Side depending on your definition. Certainly you can get to Central in 15-20 minutes from, say, Repulse Bay outside of rush hour.
