Aussie friend coming next week. Wants to go to Shenzhen. Is it still possible to get visa at Lowu on arrival? Does he need RMB to pay for it?

Not sure but the information is not very forthcoming - they seem to change the rules ad hoc. Previous visit to Shenzen (on a S African passport), I purchased a visa at the border. On my last visit, they would no longer accept my SA passport (told me I would have to apply in HK) and I was forced to buy a very expensive visa for my British passport (which they will issue at the border)

Bottom line: they do issue visas at the border for some passports - not sure if the Austalian passport is one of them.

I just been across the border with a British and New Zealand and American passport holders and they had no trouble getting a visa at the border at Lowu. There is a currency exchange window as you come up the escalator as the office need you to pay in RMB. Hope this helps.
