MPF rules

Hi,

I recently left HK to work overseas. I cashed in my MPF contributions. Am I right in thinking that if I return to HK and contribute to MPF again I won't be able to withdraw it until I retire? If this is the case, could I just pay into a private pension instead of the MPF scheme?

Many thanks for any advice.

You are correct, you can only cash in once. If you return, then all future MPF contributions are held until retirement.

MPF is compulsory, meaning you can have your own private scheme, but you still have to have MPF. It is not one or the other.
