Hi, I am moving to HK in December and looking for a place to rent.

I will be working in Central and would like a reasonably short commute to work (say, no more than 30 mins). I have only 10K budget per month on rent, and am wondering if it is at all realistic to get a one bed apartment? If so, what areas should I be looking at? Many thanks!

Thanks ever so much for your advice guys! I heard that Discovery Bay is also a popular location for expats, but what's the commute like from there to Central? Also, what about Tsing Yi?

Disco Bay is billed as "family friendly" so I don't know if there are small apartments there. There are frequent ferries to Central. The trip is about 30 minutes to the Discovery Bay Pier in front of IFC. It's a bit "love it or hate it" as a location. Maybe I'm prejudiced but if I were single I wouldn't live there.

Tsing Yi has both MTR and Airport Express stations. The MTR is on the Tung Chung and so terminates under the IFC end of Central station.

I agree with Cara, Tsing Yi is very convenient and resonably priced. Tierra Verde and Villa Esplanada easily have the kind of flats you need within your budget. They also have very decent clubhouses and facilities and are right next to a good mall with everything you need and the MTR station (<20 min to central). None of which you get for that money on HK island...

For having lived there for a few years I'd definitely recommend it.

Great, thanks all, I will definitely check out Tsing Yi.

By the way, someone has also mentioned Tsuen Wan to me...is it an area worth checking out? If anyone or someone you know has lived in Tsuen Wan, please let me know what you think of it...many thanks!

Hi unclefrank - thanks for your PM, I have just sent you a reply.

Also a question to everyone - do you think it is a good time to buy an apartment in HK? The property agent we met today kept telling us that it is cheaper to pay the mortgage than rent, but isn't the property price here at it's peak!?

Would love to hear what you think.

Thanks
