iPhone Tethering for roaming data

ORIGINAL POST

I have finally bitten the bullet and subscribed to an iPhone plan with Smartone-Vodafone HK.

Due to the nature of the work I do I travel to lots of Asian cities where I return to my hotel each evening and spend lots of time on my laptop replying to emails. When I signed up for the iPhone plan, I asked about roaming data access. It is similarly expensive for all HK carriers. Most of them do, however, offer a "day pass" which allows for unlimited data access for HK$168 or so per day. This is not attractive to me if I am also paying about the same for internet access in my hotel room.

It does occur to me that if I could "tether" my iPhone to my laptop and use the iPhone as a 3G Modem, I would be able to access emails over this in my hotel room and not have to pay for the hotel internet access.

I am wondering if this is able to be done in this part of the world and if anyone has done it and has advice?

TIA!

We looked into this a few years ago and the problem is that the processor of the iPhone is not as strong as say a what comes with 3G USB modem....so your speeds will be slow.

This was a few years ago so you may want to ask this question again....

Thanks Sg Ed,

There are some online articles in people doing this in the US and the UK and the speeds are not lightening fast but are quite usable. I guess it might depend a bit on the carrier.

I would really only use it for replying to email of an evening and accessing my company CRM (which unfortunately does not have support for mobile screens :( )

I do not want to waste time fiddlng with this if it is just not supported here in Asia. I would be surprised if someone has not looked into it as this is such a techy region.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Cheers

Dear Paul,

Apple makes exclusive deals with telecom carriers so its App Store may discourage the inclusion of connection tethering apps to avoid conflicts of interest. There is a tethering app called MyWi from the Cydia app repository.

Yes, you can use your iphone's connection through bluetooth. If you're wanting to stream video, you may be a bit underwhelmed, but for emails etc it'll be fine - depending on the speed of your local 3G network. I internet tether to a macbook pro - never tried it on a PC.

Thanks for the replies to this. I know that with my carrier, Smartone-Vodafone I can tether but I was asking if I could get away with doing it on my data roaming day pass that they offer when I am out of HK. I have gone back to the store and gathered documentation on the data roaming day pass - it expressly mentions that it does not include tethering - bummer!

Thanks for the replies anyway.

be careful of smartone-vodafone plan. unlimited data plan does NOT mean it is unlimited and has extra charges.

I subscribed to a so-called "unlimited 3G plan" and used it to track my IP Cam to look at my kids. Was shocked to recieve a extra bill of HKD1,000. Apparently according to smartone, IP Cam data traffic is not "considered data" and subject to extra charges.

Check your charges carefully!
