Raise the rent 1 year into 2 year lease?

We have a 2 year lease and we have just finished the first year. Our Landlord called us and said he wanted to raise our rent by $1000.

But we have a 2 year lease and no where in the lease does it say that he can raise the rent after a year.

However, my coworker seems to think he can.

Who is right?

I think if it is a standard lease, its written somewhere in there that landlord has the right to do so. 1000 is ok la, my previous landlord raised rent 50%!! Just take the deal.

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.

If the lease specifies the same rent for the entire 2 years then the landlord cannot unilaterally raise the rent; however, check to see if the landlord has a BREAK clause where he can give you notice to quit the lease BEFORE the end of the 2 years ….if there is such clause then you would either have to leave on notice OR pay the new rent.
