Essential sleepwear for winter baby

I will be giving birth in the middle of winter.

I am just wondering what I should let my baby wear in winter?

After reading so many articles on SIDS and suffocation, I worry about piling blankets on my newborn baby.

I've heard of grobags, however, I heard that they can probably only fit larger newborn babies or at one month old for petite babies.

If so, what kind of clothing should my newborn baby wear this winter? I'm quite small in size so I don't think my baby's going to be huge at birth. Not sure, only guessing.

Suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

To start with: Pajamas with integrated "feet". Get the kind that opens in front. Easier than over the head.

I'm pretty sure our winter baby had a grobag from the start. It doesn't really matter if it is a bit too big. Baby has it on like a sleeveless shirt on the upper body so it sits nicely even if there is more wiggle room for the legs.

Regardless of SIDS, grobags are practical and comfortable. Our kids didn't get blankets or (thin) pillows until they were over a year.

If it gets colder, add:

- an extra pair of socks

- a long-sleeved cotton shirt

- a pair of baby mittens

Petit Bateau sizes go quite small and you will have no problem finding stuff for even very small babies. There's a store in Ocean Terminal.

it also depends if you'll be using a heater in the room.

i had my babe in short sleeve onsie and a body suit (with the "feet"). you might consider swaddling your baby in the first couple of weeks then switching to a grobag.

anyway you go, keep checking your baby's temperature. if the hands or feet are very warm, then most likely he/she is too hot. and if he/she is sweating, then take off a layer of clothing, turn off the heater or you can open the leg area of the grobag (depending on which style you got).

Congrats and wishing you a fast and easy delivery!

As michelley says, if the hands and feet are warm, baby is too warm. They should be almost cool but not cold in winter. The core should be warm however.

Babies tend to sleep better if it is cool in the room. In my native Sweden, parents leave let kids take their afternoon naps in a stroller on the porch or balcony, even in winter. They sleep so well, nicely bundled up in below zero temperatures.

Some babies like swaddling and some don't.
