Ex-colleague's wedding - didn't know him very well. Dinner reception in a hotel. What's an appropriate gift if one is not going? Some of us have suggested a gift like champagne glasses, silver cutlery etc, some've suggested a gift of money. What is the usual? The couple are Chinese from Hong Kong. If it is a gift/money, how much should be the norm?

If the couple are Chinese I expect they'll appreciate a red packet to help pay for their banquet in the hotel. Unless they're very western-minded, I don't think they'll want traditional wedding gifts. The Chinese staff at work have told me that the usual going rate is $800 if you're attending the wedding and $400 if you're not, and perhaps a little bit more if you know them quite well. But as you say you don't know him that well, I'd suggest going for the $400 red packet.
