transformer

The baby monitor I want is twice the price here that is is in the States.

I am considering buying it in the States and then plugging it in here with a transformer. But I have heard stories of the transformer blowing up the device that's plugged into it (happened to a friend and his panini maker)

Does damage to a device from a transformer happen often? Or it is safer than I have been lead to believe?

Cheap transformers can have a tendency to short out, but as long as you get one from a reputable brand, it should be fine. My Japanese stereo system and game consoles have been plugged into cheap transformers for years with no problems.

Panini maker sounds like a high wattage device. It is possible that the transformer was overloaded. On the other hand a baby monitor uses very little power.

Make sure the transformer's rated output is at least 20% more than the rated usage for the device and you should be fine.
