I have an external drive on which I had stored a lot of data. Now unfortunately my computers are unable to read them. Is there any place where I can get my data extracted from the drive? and not too expensive?

Here's some suggestions you may try:
a. Try to download the ISO copy UBUNTU and burn it to a CD (refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download)
b. Boot your computer using the UBUNTU CD.
c. click "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer"
d. After booting up, connect your external hard disk to your computer.
e. choose "Places" from the menu.
f. Click or choose "Computer" from the sub-menu
g. All the available drives in the system will be shown, including your external hard drive (if its working). The drives will be shown in terms of the hard disk partition size, say 160 GB volume.
h. Double click on the drive volume to open it and all the folders/ files on that particular drive/partition will be displayed.
i. Use copy and paste to backup your necessary data.
Hope this help.
Cheers!!!

jthk999, isn't ubuntu for Linux?
Please support our advertisers:
Ubuntu is one of the many distributions of Linux. In simple terms, it is a version of Linux.

Yes, it is a version of Linux, but you can use the burned Ubuntu CD to boot up your computer. In step(c), I mentioned that you click "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" and after booting, it should recognized your external drive and use copy and paste to backup necessary data. I have used it before and it works. Thanks.
