Hello my Expatriates! I am a true blue Aussie and am now based in Hong Kong. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a weekend getaway? Nothing too far (around an hours travel max), quiet and relaxing???

All suggestions welcome! I really need holiday away from the hustle and bustle!

Not much you can get to from Central within an hour. Even Macau would take longer than that by the time you factor in waiting times for the ferry and getting to Shun Tak. If you're being strict with that hour and want quiet/relaxing, then sleep at home but go on some of the lovely walks that allow you to forget all about the city.

Oooh, I know! An hour's worth of travelling isn't much but if I didn't mind travelling, do you know of a good place?

I recently spent my weekend at the trainee operated T Hotel in Pokfulam, Hong Kong and I had a blast! It was very tranquil and for a second, I swear I was in Central Coast in NSW all over again. I wanted to share with everyone that room rates are currently $550 (which is grand for a bargain hunter like I) for the first 10 bookings per a day for a mountain view or an ocean view room including breakfast for two.

I think this is an absolute steal! My girlfriends has a very enjoyable time too and thought it was would be nice for other expatriates (as we are all from Australia so we like the sun and ocean!)

Feel free to contact me for further details (I didn't want to post them up incase I was considered advertising which I am NOT!!!~)

Cara,

Amazingly enough you can have a great weekend break in Shenzhen. Shop the web for discounts for staying at any of the five star hotels - Ritz Carlton is fabulous, Marriott is great and there are about 15 others, all charging so much less than HK, you'd be amazed. At the other end of the spectrum, even the Youth Hostel is great (find on google). Shenzhen hotels discount like crazy and have great facilities.

If you get the Map of Shenzhen from any Dymocks bookstore in Hong Kong (ask them if it is not in stock - also called Unique Guide to Shenzhen) you can find your way around easily by MTR in Shenzhen.

Australian place to hang: Xpats Bar, Hui Zhang Zhong Xin (On the metro, Central Walkway in English) Nice un-seedy but not expensive bar at major mall.

Central Coast in China: you gotta go to the beaches, all marked on the Map of Shenzhen. Get a bus from Kowloon Tong to Da Mei Sha (coach leaves regularly.) Mid-price place to stay: Kingkey Plaza Hotel. Good rates, mod Japanese-style decor.

Avoid actual Da Mei Sha beach which is free and so has as many people as the MTR but Xiao Mei Sha nearby, which has a small entry fee, is fine . Lots of other unpolluted beaches too.

Just ask if you'd like any more info. No Mandarin, just take a very small cheap dictionary with you. Taxis are strictly licensed, cheap and safe. (Although the driving can be hairy - just close your eyes, there are not many actual accidents).
