Can anyone recommend a place for our wedding reception in HK?
We would ideally like:
- lunch buffet (mix asian/western)
- approx for 140-160 people
- good view (seaview if possible)
- bright and airy venue
- indoor seating w/ outdoor garden or terrace
We would not like:
- junk boat
- small cramped space
- any of the outlying islands
- overly crowded city areas
- to pay more than total $450 per person
Ideally, the venue can also be used after seated buffet for stand up party for approx 250 ple., but not essential.
Also, is it just my findings, or do the hotels and restaurants increase their fees massively (nearly double for some) just because it is for a wedding?
It seems as soon as you say the word "wedding", they have dollar signs in their eyes!

Can't help with a venue, but in answer to your question re fee increase, the answer is yes but...
With wedding bookings, most venues will offer a lot more in decoration, waiter service, music (pre recorded) cars, photo back drops, discount coupons etc. So while the price is massively higher they do offer a few more things.
In saying all of that, if you do not need anything else other than what you have listed above then just explain that this is a luncheon for friends and family. No need to tell them it is wedding party.
Our wedding (a long time ago) I must admit we did not use all the extras that the hotel offered for our wedding reception. Discounts on photographers, cakes, make-up, invitations etc. were never used. And of course, these extras are not free you do pay for them, they are just built into the per person price.
You can still have a wonderful wedding lunch at the proper price without having all the extras that the venues offer and save some money.

Thanks bob the builder!
Your advise was useful!
We want a simple reception. We can provide our own simple decorations.
We don't need the venue to provide photo back drop, cars, cakes, etc...
Not just to save money, but we have been to a few weddings and it seems a bit OTT to us.
Did you negotiate your price then if you didn't have the extras?

No Bambee, we just took the package (number of tables) and paid up. What I meant was that we were given all these discounts and we thought great, but in the end - they were never used and just wasted. Young and naive in those days. Hindsight and maturity is always wonderful.

I suspect they charge more as they can't turn over the tables and need a maximal number of staff there at the meal service times so need to charge.
Not sure about if it is under $450 per head but the watermark near the star ferry is a beautiful venue with a view that is very hong kong. Went to a gorgeous wedding there recently.
