Have now purchased 8 of the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300N for myself and customers. Solid performance, great range, good price. Works on Mac and Windows. And it's black. ;)

I agree with axptguy that the WZR-HP-G300N is a is a very good router worthy for your consideration.

I think the aforementioned is still a bit more, probably around 5xx-6xx. There are lower spec variants of it that are in the 4xx range. However given the size of your apartment and the reinforced concrete walls typical in HK a high-power router is a big help. Our place is long and thin so we have to have two routers.

Hi, I already have a linksys router but the range is not very good and doesn't seem to get through the walls of my new flat. How do I set up a second router to supplement the first, or is it simpler just to buy a new higher powered one?

I would get a second one. Your range will be better overall. The aforementioned WZR-HP-G300N is just fine for that since it has a high power radio.
You can connect the routers either with a long ethernet cable (cheaper but there's a long cable to deal with) or with PowerPlug adapters (about 600-800 for the two units you need). With the latter you use the power cables in your walls to carry the signal.
Router setup best practice as follows:
- Plug the new router into your computer and browse to the admin interface.
- Change the wireless SSID (network name), password and authentication method (WPA, WPA2... to the exact same as on the Linksys.
- Move the router mode switch on the back from "Auto" to "Off".
- Connect your new router to the old one via long cable or powerplug.
- Done!

Hi, thanks a lot. You make it sound so easy...I am totally useless with tech stuff and it took everything to set up my first router! Hopefully I don't mess up the first router too...
Thank you

If you are using mainly Macs, why not get te Airport Extreme base Station. I know it is a few hundred dollars more but I have had no issues with mine for the past 5 years...and it is very simple to set up. It is built more solid and does not heat up that much. I had a Linksys before that and it always required maintaining.
BTW we have both Macs and PCs in the house, so not an issue. Whenever someone brings over a iPad or iTouch, the link up is very simple as well.

Hi Philly
Thanks. Why is the Airport Extreme Base Station better if you mainly use Macs. I use PCs; would it be just a good? You mentioned you use both, so what did you mean that it is better if you are using Macs?
Thanks, D

Airport Extreme has no special advantages over any other brand, even if you use a Mac. Well, it is pretty...

It is definitely prettier and feels more solid. The look also matches the look of the Mac computers - simple, clean and uncluttered design. No little antenae sticking out and nice rubber base to dissipate heat. If you like industrial design no router looks nicer. Plus it works with no drops (I can't remember the last time my computer (both the iMac and the PC) failed to achieve a signal).

I know several people who have had drops with Airport, but it is certainly a quality design. I have also had huge issues with Linksys, which has an excellent reputation. Brand name is no guarantee. Currently I use Buffalo, which is well priced and works for me. Next year they might still be good or they might drop the ball. It seems to go in cycles somehow. ;)

where's the best place to buy them? Wan Chai?

An update - despite all the good advice, and my intention to buy the Buffalo as recommended, I got convinced by some Wanchai sales guy to buy a Netgear router which he claimed was much more powerful than Buffalo. The result, I spent $400+ and the range of this router is even worse than my $178 linksys low-end router. I still can't receive any wireless signal in my bedroom...and my flat is tiny!
My fault for being so stupid!

Ouch. It's not all about pure wattage. Then again note that HK apartments tend to be very tough on signal strength, regardless of brand.
Try to get it changed. Say it doesn't work. Some shops will do this if you buy another item instead.
Have since this thread used the same Buffalo WZR-HP-G300N at several more customer sites, always with excellent results.
