Hello, We are moving to HK in February and I will be just over three months pregnant, I would like to know if any one has been in the same situation and if they can recommend obs etc or anything really.

I am from Australia, this will be my second child and I intend to return to Australia to have the baby as I have a very bad back and so I will have to have a cesarean two weeks before the babies due date. In saying this I will need to also make enquries into possibly having the baby in HK incase I have too much difficulty with my back and am unable to return to Australia.

I am looking forward to moving to HK but am a little overwhelmed by this aspect as I really don't know where to start, moving is easier than this worrying about your un born child is a different thing alltogether.

I appreciate any help, thank you.

Hi,

I gave birth twice at the Matilda Hospital at the Peak in Hong Kong. It's one of the top private hospitals and their resident doctors are good. Of course, it's very expensive.

My concern is that with the private hospitals in Hong Kong, you usually need to make an appointment when you're about 7-9 weeks pregnant, in order to reserve a bed for yourself. Otherwise, all the beds will be full and you won't be able to give birth in the hospital and will perhaps have to go for a cheaper hospital which may not be as good.

Lots of people go fully public and say that it's also great - that's the Queen Mary Hospital.

You could do a search on the pregnancy section of this forum and see what people say about the various maternity hospitals.

If you want to have a private backup in Hong Kong, then perhaps you need to make a booking now to reserve a bed for yourself.

I can understand the overwhelming feeling. It can be hard enough moving without that extra thing. But I wouldn't worry about HK when it comes to quality of care. Assuming you have health insurance that covers a private hospital, I doubt you could find much better care than in HK (for birth or anything else). The hospitals and doctors here compare favorably with any modern country you could mention. The public system is also top notch care wise, just a bit low on amenities in comparison. For example you would have to share a room after the birth and so forth and the food is not catered by the Ritz-Carlton like at the Matilda.

If it were me (well, ok my wife then) and I had private health insurance paying for Matilda or such, I'd lobby to have the baby in HK. Spare yourself the extra hassle of going back.

I'll let those with experience giving birth here recommend pediatricians.

hk private healthcare is great (though expensive). i had my baby at the Sanatorium in Happy Valley. However, my friend just tried to make a booking for her baby's birth in July but it's already full!
