stop the payment/cheque! i am not sure what the contract says that you have signed, but i am sure that a prosecution is a materially adverse fact that is not covered by the clause there already.
in any case, they can sue you, but it would take them forever to get any money out of you.
consult a lawyer though (i am sure you have one already, do you???)

Did you hear anything further? This kind of situation is not exactly a problem specific to HK, it happens all over the world. I imagine they were trying to scare you into paying up...I wouldn't lose any sleep over it

Let your solicitor take care of the matter, they should know how to handle the issue.
