I'm considering to purchase a kindle 3G, i heard that you can use the internet via 3G connection free of charge here in HK...does this mean I can take a peek at my facebook or even check e-mails using a kindle?

You can browse on a Kindle, but it is a rather horrible experience. Suitable as a very last resort only. I would 100 times rather use my iPhone despite the much smaller screen.
Surfing is indeed possible over the 3G connection (or the WiFi one). However it is black and white with graphics rendered rather poorly. Kindle doesn't run flash or anything like that so any features like animations which depend on advanced browser functions won't work. Your email might not even display at all. The screen is not a touch-screen and there is no suitable pointing device.
Finally, browsing is an experimental feature on Kindle and thus unsupported. They threw it in because it was possible, not because it was something they thought people would want to do.
If you want to browse on a tablet type device, an iPad is a much better choice, and it also supports email in the client without the need for webmail. Kindle is a stupendous book reader but it is not much good for anything else.

thanks axptguy38! Then I guess I shouldnt bother in considering to get the 3G version since I do own an iPhone anyway.
BTW, I just realized that the Kindle is only available through Amazon.com ..... what's available here at HK Book Centre is the Kobo E-Reader.... is it still ok?

No idea about the Kobo. It depends on what content you will read. If you buy books from Amazon, the Kindle makes life very easy. And if can display pretty much any other format from other publishers etc.
I have bought both my Kindles through Amazon. Free shipping. I now have the WiFi version. Unless you travel a lot or get lots of magazines, 3G is just extra weight and cost nowadays.

I would wait at the moment as they have started producing colour e-ink readers now so only a short time before this becomes the normal with all the e-readers including amazon. E-readers are mainly for reading books in a similar way to paper - less eye strain, glare in sunlight, long battery life etc. Tablets are more for a portable internet experience and for media.

Colour e-readers like the colour Nook and iPad have big disadvantages as e-readers, primarily much worse battery life.
I think iPad is a fantastic device but as an e-reader my Kindle blows it out of the water. I didn't need colour or a backlight for paper books.
