Life jacket for dog, where to buy

ORIGINAL POST

I realise most doggies swim, but when their coats get too wet they risk drowning.

Ours has never had the opportunity to swim, and we are going to relocate later this year to a house with a swimming pool, so I would rather put a life jacket on him, does anybody know where I can buy one from in HK. Thank you

Dogs know instinctively how to swim and their coats don't get too heavy. I agree with cara that the proposed life jacket is unnecessary.

I would add that cara runs a dog boarding place and so is something of an expert.

My dog has never been swimming is nearly 7 years old, and has failing eye sight.

I cannot swim and am too old to learn, at least if my dog wears a life jacket and accidently falls in the pool because he can't see I can haul him out.

bruse99 you are just plain rude.

The dog's age has nothing to do with it. Dogs don't need to learn how to swim. They know how to swim. It's instinctive.

On a side note if you can still walk you are never too old to learn how to swim.

There is the possibility that the dog fall in when no one is around and because of the sides of the pool it can't get out, fatigues and drowns. Some jackets come with a sturdy handle on the back so it is easy to left the dog from the water. Rats know how to swim instinctively but they do drown in pools??

Our poodle has a life jacket as he has had hip surgery and cant paddle properly and sinks backwards without the jacket. He loves swimming in the sea. We got his jacket in one of the pet shops in Mongkok for $190HK

You are absolutely right Cara, getting a life jacket for a dog is more for the owners peace of mind, especially when the dog is nearly 7yrs old, has failing eyesight which will probably result in total blindness, and is a breed with a double coat, so more likely to soak up water if he can't get out, and panicking.

I am talking about a real swimming pool, that he may may fall into accidently, ours is 4mx12m, and very deep at one end for diving with a slide, which cannot be compared with a paddling pool, for goodness sake he has a little paddling pool in the garden here in HK to keep him cooler in summer, no big deal! or problems with that, and he doesn't really like it either, but I have no fears at all with a paddling pool.

Thank you very much 190K and Mrs Smith, I will try the pet shops in Monkok, if you could let me know exactly which ones sell the life jacket, my dog means the world to me and I intend to keep him the rest of his natural lifespan, going blind or not which could be 15 yrs for his breed, and who knows I might be very lucky and he will be a great swimmer --better than me who sinks like a lead duck!, and I can throw the life jacket away.

Here is a PS to my last posting, it may make some of you smile, it made me laugh at the time. The predecessor to my little dog I am concerned about was a St. Bernard, he sadly died on the vets operating table with cancer. But we had very many amusing memories of what he got up to!! on 2 occasions he dived into our fishpond at our UK house, it was a large one, and 4 ft deep with straight sides, although Sebastian could put his huge front paws over the side and stand up, he could not get out, with all his strength, my daughters boyfriend was around so he got in the pond, and pushed Sebs back end up, while my daughter and I pulled the front legs. After being pulled out the second time, the dog decided to romp round the garden, and try to squeeze through a metal bar gate, his head and front end went through because he was wet, but the rest of him didn't. We had to bend the bars out to rescue him. He continued to love water, especially deep smelly drainage ditches near the fields, but could get out, because usually there was a slope.

After that we fenced the fish pond off.

It was amusing at the time, but had it been a smaller dog, like my present Westie, he would have never got out of the fish pond, or been able to stand up on the bottom.

I think Whiskers n Paws in Horizon Plaza has life jackets. Nor sure though so you might want to call them.

There is a pet shop in Sai Kung opposite the wet market by the PLB stand that sells the jackets in a variety of sizes and colours.

So...does anybody know where to get a life vest for a dog? I want to take my dog on a kayak from Pui O to Tai Long Wan.

Not all dogs can swim - I put mine in a pool several years ago and she started to sink making no attempt to paddle! Luckily I was able to grab her before she went under. So life jackets might not be such a bad idea after all! OP might not be reading this but why are you getting a house with a big pool if you can't swim?! Seems a bit of a waste...
