after visiting Shenzhen and hearing about Gounzhau, I belive other cities are amazing in comparison to Hong Kong unless you are looking for very specific brands.

I agree with the author here, unless you're interested in BS from so-called "luxury" brands, there really isn't that great a selection. The selection of books at Dymocks and Page One is truly horrific, and the pre-packaged corporate music supplied by HMV isn't any better.. Like Joel i regularly have packages coming in from Amazon, mainly because the political books, esoteric sci-fi, and graphic novels i crave just aren't available here. I'd probably turn to i-tunes for my music because the retail outlets in town suck big time, but we're not even licensed for the I-tunes store here! Which means i usually end up pirating the tunes with a view to purchasing (ordering from overseas) later. About the only things i can get on demand are electronics and electronic peripherals, which is great, but its not like i'm buying a new phone, TV, or washing machine every day.
