Skim milk powder - bread making

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

Finally got a breadmaker. For a basic white bread recipe, it needs skimmed milk powder, i've looked around but can't find this. Anyone into breadmaking? is this really necessary or a milk powder is okay. Thanks.

i found Carnation skim milk powder at Wellcome easily...haven't tried making bread w/reg milk powder as the recipe book frequently stresses EXACT measurements and ingredients....

thanks for the tip, i haven't checked wellcome. that's what i'm thinking, it says the ingredients and measurements should be exact, so i want to follow it as it's my first time to do it.

also for wholewheat flour, do you use it? the recipe calls for wholemeal but i mistakenly bought wholewheat.

i haven't tried wholewheat...i use Waitrose Organic Strong Wholemeal from Taste...you should have no prob tho...my machine suggests they are interchangeable...

As I understand it wholemeal and wholewheat are the same thing. Wholemeal is the normal UK term and whole wheat is the normal US term.

I just use a tablespoon of milk. Also swapped wholemeal with 6 seed flour or multigrain all available from City Super. I think you can try some different kind of variations as long as the total amount of flour is as per the recipe. My machine has been very forgiving so far and I tried numerous variations.

it's in a big tin, similar to baby formula, but in the UHT boxed milk aisle...

looks like this (from the Parkn Shop website, but the same at Wellcome)

hi funbobby,

thanks! i finally bought it at wellcome this afternoon, only to find out that my Anlene low fat milk is also a skimmed milk, so i returned it to wellcome ;-)

I did the bread for the first time and it was a success. Thanks montana for the tip, i'll get that from city super.

You don't actually need the milk powder. I have a Kenwood breadmaker whose recipe book calls for it and I just don't add it. It makes no difference to the final product.
