Netvigator internet problem

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone else have Netvigator internet problems today? Overseas websites are very slow or cannot be reached since 10am this morning. Eg facebook.com and yahoo.com.

I have no problem with internet on my mobile phone, which happens to be Three (the carrier), so it is either my ISP or some very localised (technical) issue.

Our IT department indicates that the Japan earthquake has likely damaged undersea cables and that this will cause problems accessing certain sites depending on where their servers are....

Normally when this happens the traffic gets re-routed - the new routing maybe less efficient resulting in slowed access to sites until the primary route is repaired...

As Ed says. HK sites are fine and Speedtest.net gives normal result. Overseas has horrible latency and bandwidth.

I'm also having trouble loading pages from overseas websites.

however, no problem with asiaxpat, gmail, cnn or yahoo (however, can't load video on yahoo).

i was going to call netvigator to see what the problem was.

i noticed everything was a whole lot slower once the earthquake/tsunami happened.

must be some underground cable.

There is much improved performance this morning.

The reason AsiaXpat, Gmail, CNN, Google and Yahoo are all fine is that they have servers in HK.

Today is indeed faster, but still very very far from normal speed.

it just feels like everything isnt working except for google based services (youtube, gmail, google docs etc.)

Not a word on the Netvigator or HK Broadband homepages of course... Typical.

In the US or Western Europe every single ISP would have information about this kind of thing prominently displayed on the homepage.

Whoa. I've been off for a couple of hours but now my bandwidth is much improved. Almost back to normal levels. European websites are still slow but US ones are doing much better.

Guess someone found some space pipe.

also had problems for 3 days..I think its a absolutely bad customer service from netvigator/PCCW not to mention anything on their homepage about this..its not a free service and we pay for it! I couldnt call out from skype overseas for 3 days now and the internet is very slow and facebook as well..if you need it for work??? What do you do?? If this would happen in europe you would get money back for 3 days undelivered service!! sorry but this arrogant behaviour from PCCW drives me mad..keeping us in the dark..

To be fair, Netvigator's service is working just fine. Speedtest confirms that speeds are normal. The issue is reaching overseas sites.

It is not Netvigator's fault there was an earthquake. This whole situation is pretty much out of their control.

However I do agree that a prominent notice on their home page would be appropriate.

First of all, ensure you are reading the units correctly. Your package is 6 Mb (note small "b"), that is 6 MegaBIT. Speedtest shows 900 KB/sec (note large "B"), that is 900 KiloBYTE. 1 kilobyte = 8 kilobit. So your speed is 900 KBx8 = 7200 Kilobit. 1 Megabit = 1024 Kilobit, so 7200/1024 = 7.03 Megabit.

If you are in fact getting 900 kilobit (small "b"), then that is of course too slow.

- Bypass the router and connect directly with your computer (you'll need to "dial" the connection from the computer) and see if the eliminates the problem.

- If the problem still persists, it is your modem and/or your cabling. In my experience this is typically the case. Call Netvigator. They'll come out and change the modem plus resplice the cable. They use the cheapest of crap cabling and it is often a problem.

- Side note: Is your modem and/or router in a cabinet? Overheating can be an issue and often leads to big slowdowns. Get them out in the open where they have some airflow.

Mine seems to be back to normal today. Yesterday was horrendously slow and Facebook and hotmail wouldn't even load at all.

It is 6Mb. They call it "6M" and if you read the fine print the plan is 6Mbps. I used to have it before I went up to the "8M" which is 8Mbps.

Our NOW freezes constantly and they have tried to fix it numerous times without success. They always come up with some interesting technical excuses as to why we have the problem! Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is your modem and/or router in a closed cabinet? Overheating is a very common cause for freezes. Move the modem and/or modem out into the open air.

If that's not it, keep calling. When they come out, ask them to resplice or even replace the cable that goes from the wall to the modem. PCCW uses the cheapest cable possible and it creates many issues.

If you have the NOW box on and are using the same modem, some of the bandwidth will be used for TV. It's not like PCCW keep that a deep dark secret.

So when you're not watching TV, turn off the NOW box.

I don't work for them, but at this point I've had them change so much of the equipment due to my whining that I know far more than I ever wanted to about the service. :)

I would also get annoyed if they gave me the wrong answer, as happened to you.

axptguy, you seem to know what you're talking about (voluntarily or not!) - we have trouble watching some live TV through another subscription and someone recommended we have a fixed line for this function as the wireless connection doesn't always seem 'stable' enough to support watching live items. Is this what you would recommend?

At the moment we need to download programmes then watch them - it would be so nice to watch them directly.

We have 2 modems due to the layout of our current flat. We are about to move so we would change one to a fixed line (for a cost of course!) and keep one wireless modem for laptop etc to cut down on the amount of wires. Does this make sense?

Thanks!

Hehe. Well, I do fix people's home networks as sort of a side business.

I would definitely recommend a cabled connection. Cable tends to be way better than wireless for streaming applications because it is not subject to interference from other radio sources. Not only are the theoretical speeds higher, but the practical speeds tend to be much higher.

What I would do is only have one modem and router only, then run a fixed line to your TV location. If you don't want to run a cable all the way use plug link through the powerlines. It's not as fast as a dedicated gigabit cable but should be more than enough for this. I have done this layout for many customers.

I'm not sure what's going on today. Netvigator is on and off constantly and Now freezing repeatedly, anyone else having the same problems?

Not me.

Another question - if we get a fixed line cable, what speed do we need to be looking at? We currently have 8M - they are suggesting 30M for approx $250 a month. 8M wireless seems to work ok - is it worth going up to 30M for wireless laptop work?

Thanks!

It depends what you are doing, but unless you are an avid online gamer or stream/download lots of movies it is not worth it.
