Hello all, I'm new to the forum, and am hoping to get some great advice :)

I'm currently 5 months pregnant and this is my first pregnancy :) I am in the process of deciding which formula is best for my baby. I plan to breast feed for the first 6 months then get onto formula when I get back to work.

How do I choose what is best for my baby? Should I stick with local brands, or would be be better to feed my baby overseas branded formulas? (ie Japan, Australia, France, NZ)

For mums that know- did you try out samples before deciding on which formula? What about costs?

Anything I should look out for?

I would appreciate some great advice, many thanks :)

it really depends how your baby reacts to the formula. if you're planning to breastfeed for the first 6 months, the you can wait to decide, you have lots of time.

trying out samples is a good idea, but samples are sometimes not enough to let you know your baby's reaction to it. perhaps getting a small tin will give you a better picture of how your baby's poop is and how well he/she can digest the formula. but changing from breast milk to formula, you should expect firmer poop than breastfed poop.

i would suggest avoiding those super popular brands that the mainlanders are crazy over like Enfapro, Friso, Wyeth etc. they are sometimes out of stock.

Agreed with michelley and cara. See what formula works for your baby.

Most formulas are good although with the frequency of food scandals in that country I would avoid anything packaged in mainland China. And don't put too much stock in the marketing verbiage. Remember they want to scare you into buying a particular brand since that one is "better" for baby... I guess I'm a cynic.

As a side track, one option is to pump breast milk instead of using formula. My wife went back to work after three months but the kids got breast milk until twelve months.

Thanks everyone for your input!

I must add that the question was asked on behalf of my friend- I just copied and pasted what she wanted to find out, and couldn't edit it for some reason.

I've taken the advice and she's very appreciative, thank you.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Basically the nutrition compositions of all reputable brands are the same. They are all cow milk base with added nutrients. As long as your baby is not allergic to cow’s milk or milk protein, actually there is no difference which brand to choose.

I too agree with what is written above , as it is a year off hopefully the lack of supply should have resolved itself by then.

We have had a joyous recent addition to the family and had to make this same decision. The hospital birthing ward, propmpted by repeatedly being asked the question, prepared a printed handout saying in its opinion, having researched the leading brands on sale in HK found that none of them had any specific advantage over the other.

There is a horrible trend towards moral blackmail that has crept into product choice for babies especialy but kids in general that pushes parents to buy expensive products "you want only the best for your child don't you" or "if you love your child you should buy this because its the best".

Cara's advice is worthwhile, by from a reputable manufacturer a product that is easily available locally at a fair price.

Just because the Japanese build great cameras doesn't mean they make great baby food!!

Hi Moms! I am an MBA student here at CUHK and I am doing marketing research for my program. Please take 3 mins to answer my survey about infant formula in Hong Kong. I greatly appreciate your help thank you!!! This is legitimate survey - not advertising - no jerking you around just a few questions about some formula brands.
