i was in Lijiang last year. once you booked a hotel, you will basically walk around the old town from there as there isnt driving roads in the old towns. the car sonly takes you to the down town and there wont be much a tourist sight. the hotel people speak enough english to show you directions or ask them to write down the destination in chinese for you and you will be fine.

what i did was get a map (from the main gate of the old twon) or buy a guide book, or just print out from internet, then you wont need a tour guide.

tips: jsut crash in any international hostels front desk, they are all friendly and willing to help even you arent their residents.

great place. have fun!

Hi.. I live in Lijiang..

You probably only need a car if you want to visit many of the outlying villages, and like to do in say one day.. Like Baisha, Suhe etc.. If you want a guide to show you more of the intersting places around Lijiang, I can reccomend another Kiwi here.. Kieth Lyons.. I will forward your post to him and he can contact you direct.. on keithalyons@gmail.com or google him + Lijiang.. see what others have to say about him.. :-)

I have a cafe here called "Through the Window Cafe" so call in if you want a change from the great Naxi food.. or want a good coffee and a chat with a local Kiwi pop in and say hi..

Or check us out on Tripadviser.com

Right! I do want to venture out from the town. Also will be staying at Banyan Tree and heard there isn't much around. Also the hotel food is not that great. Any good restaurants you can recommend? We love spicy food. Will also ck out your cafe. Thanks everyone for the reply!

Look forward to seeing you here.. If you like spicy food I can show you where there is a local Naxi restaurant that has the best hotpot I have had in China.. has beef, pork, chicken and tofu all together.. and a delicious salty fish dish, and others, and with Lijiang baba bread... Mmmnn I am getting hungry..
