a friend told me about software that can track another computers ip. if that is true how would it work? do i have to install it on the computer i want to track? i lost my macbook last summer. if this software actually exists i want to know if i can install it on my current pc and track my lost mac? if i can then the next question would be why didn't apple tell me about this when i called them and told them of my loss? and why can't they track my mac?

There are a number of software that allow remote control of a computer over the net... the software would have to be installed on the computer and the person accessing would require a username and password...

No way will you be able to track your MacBook Pro. As Ed says you'd have to install something on the Mac too.
