we are a famly of 6 adn will be movning to HK from Canada. A bit lost on locations to look for housing. Most likely will depend on which schools we get into (CDNIS, HKIS, CIS or HKA) .. but any suggestions on where to keep 4 kids under 10 happy at home?? they're used to being outside, on bikes and playing in the garden. is that possible at ALL in hong kong?

Depends on your budget - and also where you work...
South Side is excellent with beaches and good transportation - but very pricey...
A good compromise is Discovery Bay...
Sai Kung/Clearwater Bay are also great for families - however if you work on the Island its a bit of a commute in....

Discovery bay is the saddest , most depressing option to give anyone new to hkg , don't think of discovery bay even though it is beautiful but trust me don't think of this...u can look at kowloon side excellent high end appartments like Harbour green / Harbour view / AND MANY MORE , but at the end all depends on ur budget..don't get worked up hkg is one palce u will nver get lost...all the best

All the schools you list are on HK Island - HKIS being the furthest you could get from Discovery Bay or Saikung and would involve a very long commute for your kids.
South side of HK Island would likely be your best option - a lot depends on your budget.

I suggest you look at Red Hill if your budget can take it. Lots of greenery. Quiet streets to bike on. Townhouses.
There are also some lovely buildings in Shouson Hill with private gardens. Do check building policy and attitude towards children playing in said gardens though.
There are many buildings on South Side that have (for HK) nice green areas. Typically these won't be the "fancy/shiny" buildings though. So look around.
Even in our pretty normal apartment, my kids are outside every day. No garden but we have a nice terrace. Also they are on the beach and at the playground. And the woods with hundreds of miles of trails are only three minutes away.

Try Park Island. This place is cheap because locals place a huge premium on convenience and no cars are allowed. By western standards, though, this place is convenenient and has loads of well-maintained facilities. See http://www.parkisland.com.hk

One thing is important when moving: Don't try to recreate your old life here. While you can look for some of the features, you can drive yourself nuts looking for your exact requirements. HK is a different place and if you don't adapt you will probably end up miserable.
Now having said that, there are plenty of places with greenery and all that. But it won't be bucolic.

No, Park Island is not cool but it's great for small kids if they want to ride cycles and play. I reluctantly sold up there, though, because my kids go to local schools and they needed to be somewhere more convenient. Also, I couldn't face the 25 minute journey. I suppose that qualifies me as a real Hong Kong person,.

NO , Park island is the most ridiculous place in hong kong , sometimes i don't know y these guy's build it , no cars , taxis are allowed onloy specific time , everything more expensive inside by 20% , travelling painful , i strongly suggest these places and extremely convenient... Hong Kong Side South Horizon/Stanley/Repluse bay/Pokfulam/Midlevels , Kowloon side Harbour View / Olympic/Harbour green/Metro Harbour View great estates plenty of room for children and all great locals...agan all on ur budget...further don't get too tensed hkg is the finest place u will love it

we are just leaving Park Place, opposite wong nai chung reservoir, to move back to the UK. We installed a 4th bedroom. It is on the edge of the country park, has great facilities and young children play downstairs. it is good for central and for the south side. good for getting to most schools too. but the price is going up hugely I hear...................

you can try Tung Chung around the Caribbean or Coastal Skyline ......... lots of outside space ........ conveniences and wet markets and schools ......... outdoor activities like mountain walking, lots of space by waterfront, lots of cycling ..... buses to International School at DB ...... Apmt Prices are definitely more affordable compare to HK island

I agree with Axptguy38 - do not recreate your life here... a new life and world await you here. You are 100% correct - first see if you can get into a school since that is the most difficult part for expats - the accommodation comes later and is much easier than finding a school. DB is great for children - dare I say "wide open spaces"? But schooling is a problem.
