I'm looking for ideas on a weekend getaway that's a less-than-3 hour, direct flight from HK, which would be great for kids under 6.
Any suggestions?
Also, what websites are good to use to search for cheap airfare within Asia?
Thanks!

Taipei has many kid friendly places and is ideal for a weekend trip.

if your kids are small, but you are interested in doing something more than lounging by the pool, I would highly recommend Taiwan. We just did 2 trips with our kids within half a year. They are 3 and 5 and both enjoyed it tremendously. It is probably not considered much by non-Chinese speaking/reading foreigners because of the language barrier.
I lived in the US for 10 years. My family still has a house there. Originally, I considered taking my kids there, but was deterred because of the flight time and the costs involved. I did a lot of research and found that many types of places which I planned to take my kids to in the US are actually available in Taiwan! Highlights include:
>visiting a hand-made paper factory and make your own paper, then use that paper to make a fan.
>visiting a balloon factory and make your own balloon
>petting zoos, ranch and farms (e.g. milk cows, feed calves, pet baby goats, ride horses)
>fruit picking (last time we picked grapes)
>beach
>acquarium (much better than Ocean Park)
>visiting shallow sea/beach to see/touch marine life (including tons of sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars, etc. There were so many of them that my daughter had a hard time trying to avoid stepping on them)
>Dolphin watching
....the list just goes on. I took my kids to Phuket, Bangkok, Cebu, etc. before. I am just not so interested in lounging by the pool all the time with them. We did go to Bohol and visited our helper's place. Wonderful. Kids got to harvest rice, picked cocoa fruits, dug up sweet potatos, went to a local kindergarten, boat trips to the island, dolphin watching, etc. We also went to inner Mongolia. Stayed at a "modern" type yurt, went horseback riding in the plains (watching the cows graze), camel riding, visited the desert, visited a diary factory, and did a traditional dinner. You would be surprised at how clean and modern inner Mongolia is. Only driving distances are a bit far in between places. I want to take my kids there again in two or three years. They have a Mongolian sports festival every July, but the site is a bit out of the way. Better to wait till my kids are a bit older. I also want to visit the Inner Mongolia/Russian border town. heard that it's quite interesting.
We are more interested in taking our kids to nature and doing outdoor activites, so video games, waddling at the pool most of the time, etc. is usually not what we are looking for. Those seem to be things which you can easily do in HK.
