wondering if anyone here know of the Aussie mechanic that can install anchor points for securing car booster seats? I know it's the safest thing to have them so wondering if anyone knows this person as I've heard of him through the grapevine but noone is able to give me details...um maybe he is an urban myth...please reply if anyone knows anything! Keen to keep my kids alive on the road and be the safest I can be with all those crazy drivers! thanks!

First of all as cara says, booster seats need not be attached. You just use the seat belts. Those are strong enough to hold an adult so more than enough for a child.

If you are talking "car seats", ISOFIX (Europe) also known as LATCH (North America) anchor points are very practical but if you mount a car seat with the seat belt it is just as strongly attached. In fact many car seat manuals say you must use the seat belt once your child exceeds a certain weight since the mount points have a lower strength limit than the belts.

I would not get mount points retrofitted for two reasons:

- A waste of money since the belts work fine and are just as strong if not stronger.

- You have no guarantee these retrofitted points are as strong as they need to be. So you are potentially endangering your child.

thanks for your replies, bring over seats from Oz, and they need to be attached at the back with a tether strap, all the cars in Australia have them, its just safer, it holds the seat in place in case of accident, so the seat doesn't move. I think the same models are available there without there strap, but would prefer it. It secures the booster seat to the car but you stilluse the seat belt on the kid. Aussie road standards are really stringent as there are so many deaths on the road, so would just like to be as safe as I can. Anyone else who has installed an anchor point please let me know! thanks!

I think we're having definition confusion:

- "Car Seat". An entire seat with its own seatbelt harness for child. Attaches to anchors or seat belts.

- "Booster". A "cushion" that raises the child up to the proper height to use the car's own seat belt. Is not attached.

The tether is theoretically safer but if the attachment point isn't there... US and Sweden are also pretty strict on car seat standards but they do not have the requirement, which indicates to me that the benefits may not be huge.

Also as mentioned, I would not trust a retrofitted attachment point. It has not been tested and certified to work and may have effects that are totally unintended in a crash. In many jurisdiction fitting such an anchor point would be illegal for good reason.

Just a tip guys, a new report from the Automobile Association of America found that 77 percent of all mothers and fathers surveyed said they met or surpassed the recommendations regarding kid car seats set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics one year ago. You might want car finance loans for a safer car.

For Australian safety council capsules and carseats you can find the anchor bolts at BABYCO, we purchased ours over the phone and paid for them to post them to us in Hong Kong. Unless your car is vintage you will have the bolt anchor areas already in the car (take a look at your car manufacture info) You may need to purchase and extension strap if your anchor point is in the boot (I needed one for a BMW sports car as the anchor was way back but the extension worked). If your car does not have the points (I had a 1966 MGB and we had to have it specifically fitted but as I said unless your car is vintage you should have no problems)
