Best to go to the police and ask them if they can do anything as soon as possible.. They may be able to locate him. He could be one of those guys who deliberately scams women.

If you met at a dating site where he has a photo posted maybe the police would recognize him, especially at the closest police station to where he lived before he disappeared. Or did you take photos of him, perhaps with your phone cam? Got anything you know he touched? If he has a criminal record you could track him that way. You will need to know his real name to file a lawsuit.
Some travel insurance policies and homeowners/renters insurance would cover this loss.
