I think operator like 3 sell them.
For one without a contract, Wan Chai Computer Centre. Just ask around. You'll have to pay a bit of a premium.

thank you.
so if i get a 3 contract. i can obviously use it internationally but will it be more expensive to using in the UK for 5 weeks??
is it dodgy to buy one outside apple but at the wan chai computer cente, where i've been several times before?
thanks...

Yes you can use it internationally but data roaming charges tend to be nasty. You could also get a UK pay as you go sim card with data service and use that. If you have access to WiFi that is best.
Not really dodgy in the WCCC I would say. The store I have used twice for iPad is on the lower floor and the "back left" corner, that is as far from the entrance as you can go.

Thanks so much for this. Much appreciated.
...But can I just use wifi?? ...What do I need a contract for? ...Any advantage, over wifi, in having a contract??
Sorry for ignorant question but I really would prefer to ask you here rather than have the possibility of getting lost in translation at the wccc ;)
thanks again.

Depends on your usage pattern. If you're at home all the time, for example, all you need is WiFi. If you're out and about without easy access to WiFi and you want Internet access, you also need 3G.
If you're unsure, get a 3G model (yes it costs more) and try it without a SIM card for a while.

ok, so 3g = contract ;) i get why that is now, thanks. yes a friend a while ago said wifi was just fine feeding off her iphone ...my iphone drains fast so i'll def get 3g, i just didn't realise the contract part. i think i should be fine then without sim here just to transfer stuff from my mac to that before heading to the UK and getting 'UK pay as you go sim card with data service' in uk. then a sim/contract for when i'm back here ...?
thanks!

I ordered mine from ORIGINAL TECHNOLOGY LTD. in Macau (Apple Authorized Dealer) same price from the Apple Store, but i waited less than a month, my friend recently bought one in Broadway but firth they said they dont have , but then again they said if you want to buy now you need to buy the package which includes some cover ect. that worth $1000 plus and the price of the Ipad 2 itself is higher than the Apple Store price..so my friend spent $10K plus for Ipad2/3G, 64gb .

Just to be clear, you don't have to get a contract with a 3G iPad. It is an option. However with the WiFi model it is not an option.
And yes, you can get a pay as you go in the UK.
10k for a 64G 3G is a lot. Paid just over 7k for a white one (more expensive) including a nice cover and screen protector.

There are no Apple stores in HK. DG Lifestyle is the big Apple reseller and their outlets are pretty much the local "Apple Store". There are DG Lifestyle stores in IFC and Times Square for example.

thanks, but i've found the page before somehow(!?) and the guys in an apple store in Lockhart st showed me the page again. i did call only DG whilst there. i think they were 'premiere resellers' and as they were out of stock i didn't have much hope (from previous exp seeing the line at in fortress and a biref ring round before but thought id call around to find out more when home, couldn't find the page and asiaexpated.. ;)
thanks :)

Studio A is also a big Apple retailer in HK along with Broadway and Ultimate. If you have an iPhone you can connect your iPad to the 3G service on the iPhone via an app (I think you need to jailbreak the iPad first). Thus, you will not need a 3G contract specifically for the iPad.
My iPad 3G 64G (original) is faster using my home wifi than using the 3G to access the web.

Just to say, and i've been meaning to scribble back sooner! axptguy38 thanks in particular for you grea advice. i checked with a HK/US guy who i asked at the top of the escalator if it really was the 'lower ground floor' and he said he had time to kill and could chat cantonese (as we weren't then too sure where back left corner may be) in the hope that prices remain reasonable. he checked (owning an ipad) that it was through HK distributors and not via other countries etc for warentee purposes. screen cover, 64G 3G and cover 7500 at ...oops, can't find card right now :( anyways, THANKS. enormous help :) and happy owner ;)
