Taxes for a US Citizen

Hi, I'm moving to HK next week for a new job. I'm a US Citizen and my fiance, who has already been in HK for ~2 months, is a South Korean Citizen. We plan to file taxes separately when we are married.

My understanding of my taxes while I'm in HK is that the first $91,400 is exempt from BOTH US and HK taxes. I will have to pay US Federal taxes on the rest as if I was working in the US but I won't have to pay any State or Local taxes.

Is this understanding correct? Thank you for your help!

If you are from Boston, you may have an Irish grandparent. If so, why not take up the Irish passport - which gives you full access to all EU states and the UK's National Health Service - and ditch the US one. Then you'll only have to pay HK taxes like everyone else.

I'm not Irish actually...I was born in China but immigrated to the U.S. when I was young. Certainly am not going to give up my U.S. citizenship for a Chinese one :)
