Hi PB

We recently used Hung Kee and they did a fantastic job fixing the mess created by Wolfgang Derler and WP Engineering!! I highly recommend that you do not use them! They are currently under investigation by the EMSD and the police!

Check our the Face Book Group Consumers Against WP Engineering and www.bewareofwpe.com for more information about this company and their fraudulent practices!

No problem Fngan - also please be aware that carlos93 is Wolfgang Derler. Seems he has lots of time on his hands to play on AsiaXPAT. Guess his business is dying

Hi Fngan,

I used Kong Ah in Wan Chai. They were clear and helpful, they did run late but we had an agreement with deadline and costs which were then fairly negotiated.

Wished we had gone to Kong Ah first and not Wolfgang at WPE who left work unfinished 6 months past deadline and still owe me money for work never commenced. So like R Smith and many, many other people we had a bad experience with WPE. There are some good operators about though, good luck.

Hi Fngan,

Hope your search for a contractor has been fruitful. As we are expats, we can sometimes be at the mercy of the language problem, but I must warn you, don't fall for the English-speaking contractor until you have done enough research about their company. And don't believe all the bad press that local contractors get either - there are some good, honest ones about.

Sadly when we started renovations we didn't think to seek advice from these forums and went with WPE, who target the expat market from the language advantage (English speaking) and the whole European quality argument. On hindsight, I would rather have spent my money on an interpreter and gone with a local firm with a good reputation.

All I can say is, do the homework on whatever company you choose. Make sure they have an office that is centrally located so you can go there if and when problems arise - many contractors have offices in the New Territories, which is a huge deterrent when you want to sort out issues face to face and they won't respond to your calls, something that happened to us with WPE.

And we didn't realise this, but WPE were not licensed to do any electrical work, something we only found out afterwards. So check that the company you use is registered with the ESMD.

Best of luck to you.

Dear Fngan

Indeed your project is one of serious volume and should be executed by a reputable company. Make sure they have the necessary qualifications. Let them show you records. Also insist on insurance specifically for your project. A decent contractor would provide this to you. They will give you a copy of the policy confirmation. Obviously you will have to pay a bit for that. Also ask for a detailed schedule plan on when what work should be performed. And make sure the payment schedule is not based on dates or time limits, but if there is any such schedule make sure it is based on items/work delivered in approved manner and according to your requirements and as per contract. Some shoddy companies actually act in a very cunning manner with unaware people like you and use all nice tricks to promise you items and quality they are both unable and unwilling to deliver.

Go check for several quotes and compare them and ask for references. If you know someone personally who has done a renovation with a reasonable result, then you preferably go with that company. Under no circumstance go with companies where you have only seen promises on very nice looking websites. That could make you waste a lot of money and come with huge mental distress and negative experiences about business practices that are beyond what you might feel is acceptable. You may also check the company's legal records.

Wish you good luck!
