1. Non-surgical rhinoplasty - Filler injection
Rhinoplasty for aesthetic reasons does not necessarily involve surgery; normally a filler injection with local anesthesia would do the job. There are two types of filler injection, permanent and temporary ones.
Both require trained injection technique, which can be done in office based and the whole procedure takes around 15 minutes. Patients usually recover within a week after the procedure.
The permanent filler injection uses materials such as PAAG. As the materials will not be absorbed by the body, only one injection is required for the entire treatment.
Temporary injections uses materials that mimic collagen tissue, therefore it is less likely to be rejected, though regular injection is required to maintain the desired shape.
However, there are potential consequences which the body will regard the filling materials as foreign objects and rejection may occur, hence forming scarring and death tissue. Besides, injection technique is critical and trained doctor is necessary for injections.
2. Surgery - Implantation
Surgery could provide a substantial effect. Hence, for functional rhinoplasty, it is the only treatment option for them. There are two techniques commonly used in implantation: open- and closed- technique.
Open technique means opening up the entire nose so the surgeon can put the implant materials on top of the position precisely. As it involves a more extensive wound, recovery time is expected to be longer up to 6-9 months.
Closed technique can be done using endoscope, and therefore scarring is much reduced and confined to the interior of the nose, which gives no scars on the surfaces. Patients usually recover in a month’s time.
On the other hand, different implant materials are available on the market for implantation, including, silicone, goretex, EPTFE and even your body ribs.
Silicone was once widely used in the past and due to its potential body corrections after the surgery, the popularity has decreased. As it is cheaper than most of the others, it is still being used nowadays.
Another option, yet more expensive, is goretex, which marketed for almost 10 years. Goretex can resist normal tissue shrinkage… Reference: www.entific.com.hk
