We just moved to HK and I have three young kids who are all due for doctor visits. We are living way out in ma on shan so I want a doctor who is close by and not make long treks to Central with them.
Does anyone have a good doctor they recommend in MaOnShan or even ShaTin??? Ideally western trained or thinking.
Does anyone have experience in using public hospitals here for check ups? I hear they are great here once you have a HKID card.

I take my daughter to Union Hospital in Shatin (get off at the Tai Wai Station). It is a private hospital and I feel that I am able to get my questions answered fairly well. Not sure about the public because I haven't tried them yet.

thank you! do you know if you can make appointments to see the same doctor each time or do you have to just see who ever is available?

You can see the same doctor each time and there are many different pediatricians to choose from. I think it is around 350 HKD to see the doctor. Drugs, shots and whatever additional you might need is extra. Hope that helps.

ok I went with the recommendation at Union hospital and luckily they had a branch location with the same doctors right nearby in MaOnShan. The doctor was great and gave good attention but I was disappointed when he recommended my son go on formula. I guess this could happen back home too. My son is just turning 12 months old and is breastfed slowly switching to cows milk. The doctor here though says cows milk isn't sufficient and recommends formula for the concentrated nutrition, saying HK milk isn't fortified.
Has anyone else had this advice? I have much to learn but will stick with the fresh milk for now.
And yes, the fee was a $350. I thought it was well worth it.

I agree that formula is over prescibed here. But, I had the same issue when I was back in the states when I started switching to cow's milk. The milk I was buying from a local dairy which didn't have vitamin D added. I asked the pediatrician and they said that it would be better to give my daughter milk with vitamin D added. Hope that helps.

I use the pediatrician at the Union hospital too. I am quite satisifed with their service except they don't seem to promote breastfeeding as much. When my baby turned 4 months, the pediatrician said that we should start solids because breastmilk alone wouldn't give my baby the nutrients she needed.
At 6-7 months, I get a lot of pressure from the local community to feed baby chinese congee 3 times a day (an adult rice bowl each time I am told) instead of the few spoonfuls she's been getting from me until she turns her head.
I hope I'm doing the right thing.

Having just come from Vietnam where the same congee - in large bowlfuls - are served 3-4 times a day starting at 4 months, I can sympathize. But then I just remember how all the kids in my home country eat the way I feed my own child, starting with just fruits, veggies and instant infant cereal - all introduced one at a time. Those kids grow up healthy too. It just shows that there are many paths to a healthy child. But it sure does help to have a doctor who has the same mind as you so you can follow the advice when you feel you're veering off or just need some good reminders.
WHile waiting at Union to pay my bill I noticed other moms picking up meds for their sick kids. My goodness there were line ups of colorful bottles to be given. Like 5 on average. Oh my. This isn't what we like.

I asked about why so many presciptions. My answer was that they don't have just one multipurpose drug for things like colds. What they end up doing is prescribing something for fever, something for secretions/mucus, etc. Basically one drug per symptom.
