Air Pollution/Sick Kids/Southside vs. Mid-Levels East

Hi,

Since coming to HK my children have been constantly sick, primarily with respiratory issues. We currently live in Mid-Levels East, overlooking the racecourse, and I'm afraid we're subject to much of the Causeway Bay pollution.

Would a move to the Southside make any difference, or is the pollution there more-or-less the same? When I drive by there it seems that there is also a haze. I would love to hear from others who have moved from Mid-Levels/Central area to the Southside.

Many thanks.

Quite a few people are reporting air filters help http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/medical-and-health/threads/131241/alen-air-purifiers/

We do have air IQ air filters throughout the apartment. Where we are now I feel like I can't really open the windows and I'm wondering if Southside is overall cleaner.

You are correct HKM3, it is most likely the pollution making your children sick. It is truly shocking although there have been some pollution free days this year. Moving to the South Side will not be any better, for the last few days I have been unable to see the sea from my apartment and I am right by it, having said that it is a bit clearer this afternoon. The polluiton is bad all over HK and people who think it is better in certain areas are kidding themselves.

I live at The Summit and can see the harbour from my living room and a little over the top of the the peak from my kitchen and both sides seem to suffer equally to me. I think it is just harder to see pollution once it's over a larger body of water but it's still there. A good way to gauge it is to get an offshore view of both sides of the island.

have a look at the bedding and (if applicable) plush toys in your childrens' bedrroms as well. mold could be affecting their breathing. our 3 yr old had severe breathing difficulties this spring, and after 3 days in hospital, local docs diagnosed her with asthma and prescribed ventalin inhaler.

second opinion suggested mold, NOT asthma...we dumped all her plush toys, bedding and (sure enough!) moldy mattress and we've never used the inhaler yet!

long story short, check the house for mold

Southside air is definitely better. Get away from roadside pollution and bad PI indexes. Get closer to the open water and wind blowing inwards to China.

Pollution from the delta-- true that not much can be done other than moving further away from it.

But you cant even see it so this business about it getting smoggier due to that is rubbish. in so far as it is smog it is from the vehicles in town.

Dont know about air filters but am suspicious they can do anything other than suck dust etc which of course is not a bad thing at all.

The point about mold and allergies above-- very good one. You and your kids have no doubt not grown up in a sub-tropical zone either and it does take years to get used to it.

Also get fresh air,, as odd as that sounds-- constant air con is bad for you imho. but I have zero scientific data for that :-)
