hi everyone....i finally joined my fiance in HK...we are living in bel-air phase 4 in cyberport...we moved in a month ago and like the place so far...

we just got our elec bill and am surprised it's this high - the bill is HK$1200-ish for 24 days excluding the HK$3500 deposit.

we rent a 1700 sqft gross apt...net sqftage is probably 1200-ish. it's a 3 bedroom...we converted the smallest bedroom into a walk-in closet...because my fiance is freaked out about potential mold problems, we have the A/C on in the walk-in closet 24/7, however, we usually keep the closet closed. The second bedroom is currently unfurnished so we keep it shut all the time. We don't use the A/Cs in the living/dining room and master bedroom too often - we use them on and off.

We're just 2 people so we don't have a lot of appliances....

I'm curious if my bill is normal??! thanks!

More than likely, yes! ... we've had some horrendous bills during the summer months, aircons are VERY expensive to run ... especially if you're running one of them 24/7.

Meant to add ... an ordinary dehumidifier would do the job just as well to prevent mold and wouldn't cost anywhere near as much to run.

Thanks Sapphire...we're gonna switch in a dehumidifier in the walk-in closet...

Didn't know that dehumidifier works just as well as A/C on preventing mold...are both required in summer months or is one enough?

In your closet I'd just go with the dehumidifier as it takes all of the moisture out of the air (you'll be amazed how much!), which is what causes the mold ... just remember to empty it regularly!

cara, that is a biggie! Our biggest so far was around $6,000+, but we've just moved into a bigger place and I'm dreading the next bill!!:-S Hubby is going to kill me!LOL Roll on the winter months!!

We have a 30 year old, 2000sqf house, 3 bedrooms, 2 stories, bad insulative qualities, single glazing, lots of windows, etc which is identical to our neighbors house. He has old cheap air cons throughout and we have put in 5 top of the line Daikin split systems (it was $75k out of the renovations budget. )

His electricity bill is around $10000 for 2 months in the summer and ours is around $4000 for 2 months. Mind you, he's almost never home and never cooks at home and lives alone and we're a family with 2 kids and a helper, cook almost every meal at home (induction and electric) and have all the air cons on dehumidify or cool 24/7.

Moral of the story: the quality of your appliances will make a massive difference to your electricity bill. See if your landlord is willing to update them.

Cara, see if you can upgrade your appliances, we think they will have at least paid for themselves in the 1st 12 months and they heat, dehumidify and cool so the house is comfortable and mold free year round. Our next step when we have room for it in the budget is double glazing and solar film!
