How difficult is it to bring pets into HK?

Hello,

We are relocating to HK for a few months to see if a long term stay works for our family. We have a (larger) dog and cat who are part of our family. If we did decide to stay long term, how difficult is it to bring them into HK? Do you find HK to be dog-friendly?

thanks

I have brought my dog into Hong Kong twice with no problem. Here is your one dilemma. You can either do the paperwork yourself (very cheap) or hire a reputable pet moving service which cost me about $2,300 U.S. all inclusive. I preferred the pet moving service because I wanted professionals to handle my dog. Keep in mind there is no quarantine but if the paperwork is done incorrectly your dog may be quarantined which is at the discretion of animal control officers at Hong Kong airport. You will have to start preparing 30 or more days in advance. Your dog will need a microchip and the brand HK accepts is the AVID chip. All vaccinations must be up to date. get the AVID chip first before giving your dog the rabies vaccination (important). I believe in HK they only need the 3 in 1 vaccination instead of the 5 in 1 normally given in the USA. Your dog will have a 30 day wait to get into HK so don't start the paperwork a week before you leave. My advice is if you have the money hire a pet moving service. The one I used both times was animal land petmovers and they were fantastic. If you decide to do the paperwork yourself there is one extremely important thing to make sure of. Do NOT give your dog any tranquilizers before flying. That could kill your dog. Most dogs make the trip on their own just fine. The flight is about 15 hours plus the hours before so your dog will most likely be in his/her kennel for 19 + hours. Here is the website for animal land:
