Mobile Tariff for an Expat

Hello All,

I move to HK with my work next month and one thing that sprung to mind was possibly the need to get a HK mobile (with data). How easy is it for someone from the Uk which is recently just moved to HK to get a contract with a mobile network over there? Am I better to get a "pay as you go" and if so, does this include some free data usage?

Data usage within HK? there are many packages available from different providers depending on what you want. the horror stories Bob mentions is people going overseas and continuing roaming. My wife has Smartone for her android and pay $480/month unlimited data and calls (within HK) she has to spend more to get data when overseas so she leaves it in HK when travelling.

So you can get a pay as you go tariff which include data?? If so then thats great. As I will be new to HK I won't have a credit history and therefore I was unsure they would allow me to get a contract tariff.

credit history isn't a problem for mobile phones in hk, as long as u hv a hkid card and proof of address, that's ok

I won't have a HKID as I will only be entering the country for the first time next month on a 12 month business visa. I will however have a HK bank account with proof of my address in HK during this time. Not sure if that would get me one in that manner.

I'm using the $198 PCCW plan, unlimited data + 1,200 talk mins, 4000 NOW TV mins.
