USD and moving to HKG

Hello,

I've been offered a job back in Hong Kong. The pay is about 10% higher than what I am getting here in Oz (after taxes). But with the USD tanking and likely to do so for some time to come, I am thinking moving to HKG (at least from a financial point of view) might not be the best idea...

Anyone taken this into their move considerations? The AUD is close to an all time high against the USD and I guess might go a lot higher...

hi simon,

10% is not worth it ...... if you are young and wanna enjoy a new environment with possibility of exploring China, then can give it a try ..... but for career building its not that wise ...... unless you can nego with a fallback that is if things dont work out and you can still go back to OZ for a job or some kind of compensation if job lost ....... Anyway check HK out if you will like the lifestyle here with a definite space cramp be it in your apmt or on the street .......

PS... The last time i did a temp move to Moscow ....... it was at least 200% jump

The Aussie dollar is over-valued at the moment, according to some pundits. But, IMHO, if you are young enough, career prospects, experience, etc are probably more important than a strict comparison of remuneration.

I dropped money to come to HK many years ago, and have never regretted it for a second.

Well, I am not young and I can't negotiate a fallback. Pay is about $92K/month (with bonus) and its just me and my wife. I liked Hong Kong the first time we went and we had a great time. We did all the main walks, traveled in the region, enjoyed the food and liked it a lot. Downside for me was that the unit we were in was a little too noisy for my liking. I think the main attraction was that I felt I was working somewhere that wasn't an outpost like Australia i.e. more central and more in-tune with what is happening in the world. I like to travel and Hong Kong fit the bill.

We did plan on taking a year off and travelling the world when we left last time but we ended up coming straight back to work here in Oz. I guess if the job doesn't work out this time we could do the travelling thing...

If you cannot tolerate noise, Hong Kong is probably not the place for you (unless you are earning big bucks and can afford to live on The Peak, or similar places).

Thinking of staying in ClearWater Bay this time in a Village house. Should be a lot quieter and a lot cheaper :). I guess the commute time to Tai Koo would be no more than 1 hour?

There will be a lot of dog barking going on if you live in a village house. Don't think you can tolerate that.
