Moving from London in March, EXCITING, and was after some advice...

I work in sales so its mainly a commission based job.

I've got $30,000 a month to live off until I get a good pipeline of business going etc.

Where do you think I am best off living on this budget? I like to have some left to go out with!! So maybe $12000 a month on rent??

I'd like to live on HK island if possible...

Do many people share in HK? This is what I'm used to doing in London - is there a 'best' website to find these?

Coronation street is on the telly (and you can watch live UK TV on an iPad and by implication TV)

Yes you can buy sausages (bangers)

Jordan is a suburb of Kowloon and in my view more interesting / attractive than the UK variety.

Thanks for the useful and relevant replies, I have found out that it is possible to buy fish and chips and sausages in HK...

Some of us are still in HK and staying well clear of the UK because of the likes of Coronation Street and "Hello" magazine!!

Hey there are also less wingeing Pom's here, not sure if that applies to you though!,

HKG is also Asia's world city (self appointed).

You may even be able to stretch that budget, to incorporate a part time slave (mostly illegal for the moment, but that all may change soon). You can also get tips on how best to abuse and humiliate your helper right on this website.

The underground is not QUITE so crowded and a lot cleaner than in Landan, and, they don't go on strike here.

No NHS!

Bone chilling winters with no central heating, sauna summers, tiny apartments, cheap cabs, expensive marmite, no pork pies.

You will however need a work permit since HK is no longer a British territory, that was a bummer for many of you, all those years ago when you gave us back to China.

This link may be more favorable than my original advice regarding the underground: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UtUeToAsvE&feature=related

I'm in London at the moment - don't talk to me about bone-chilling winters, more soul-chilling here!

You will love Hong Kong, most people don't have a soul to chill here. It is always however a case of looking across at the greener grass. A lot of people have a love hate relationship with Hong Kong, but it is always really what you make of a place.

Before you leave this forum for the plane however, can you please list 20 things you like about London for us?

depends what are u expecting. with $12000, in hk island side u could rent a flat with 400 sq ft in Wanchai district, at the busy and local kind area. or u could try to rent those old bldgs in West Central district.

Your list is not very imaginative,or you are easy to please!

Variety of decent mid-budget food (eg good, Turkish Kebab houses) - Got, as long as they are Asian.

Variety of women - enough here to "chews" from.

Architecture - none to speak of, a handful of colonial remnants, a few new signature pieces, the balance is endless rows of grimy over priced tenement and slum blocks.

Variety of booze available - Got and its a bit cheaper here if you are not buying in a bar, Pimms and some aperitiefs may be rare though.

Random nights out (eg. Underground Rebel Bingo) - Karaoke

Beer Gardens - beer doesn't grow on trees here, its all imported.

The River - none to speak of here, Victoria Harbor is the closest, and more animated and exciting, unless you venture to Shatin, you can even go skulling there.

The Commons/Parks - HK has a few parks, but not like London, country parks are closest things to the Commons

Variety of greasy take-aways - Got, greasy take aways, as long as they are Asian, usually found in Mong Kok on street corners at 2:00am,

Meat market nightclubs - Got a couple, not enough!

Public transport - Better here and cheaper

History - All gone, it was sold, demolished and replaced with more grimy buildings

Wow, a lot of depressed people trying to be funny on this thread! Jog on you lot.

OP - You can definitley live well off 30K a month to get you started. I'd recommend checking out Kennedy Town where you can likely find something decent for 12k. Either K-town, Sheung Wan or Sai Ying Pun but SW is probably pushing it to find anything decent for 12k anymore.

The one thing you'll miss is the beer gardens! Still, we have some brilliant alresco places to drink so wouldn't be too disheartened! let me know if you have anymore questions.

Thanks all!

Kerrin, no I'm just coming with a big suitcase, 5cm doesn't sound like much, is there something you would like me to bring?

No drug-mule teddy bears!
