My 9 yo daughter LOVES dogs and wants us to adopt a dog. The problem is that I have never had a dog and don't know how to take care of them also I am not comfortable having one in the house. When I said no to her, she went to the library, researched and came up with suggestions for the 'right' dog breed for us. I have also told her that taking care of a dog is a very responsible task and not a hobby. Every time she sees one in the building or anywhere, she starts begging me for one. She is a very good child, excellent in her studies and I am running out of ideas. I just don't know how to dissuade her.
I also bought her an aquarium as a pet.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Cara, I agree with you completely and that is what I have tried explaining to my daughter. She has been saying that she will take care of it. Like my previous post says, I am unable to refuse her. I really miss those days when one 'NO' was enough!

i went through this with my son a few years ago (he's 13 now) - i tried the mature and open discussions about why we couldn't have a dog and in the end, it was the old "my house my rules"
i did suggest he spend some time volunteering at spca which still hasn't happened ......

Thanks for all the responses.
Ed, thanks for the link
Turtle1 , the minimum age for volunteering is 16, maybe that's why it hasn't happened
WonTon, fostering a dog is a good suggestion. Don't know how I'll cope though
Cara, the house is also my daughter's ...the thing is I have been saying 'No' to this issue for a long time, I want to put an end to it.
I think I'll just fake an allergy towards dogs, maybe that will work!

hmm, if minimum age for volunteering is 16 then that also tells me his research skills aren't great ... lol
as cara said, she lives in yr hse and you are the parent - no is no
there are some things which you just can't compromise
my son has now given up on the dog and now says "when i grow up and live on my own i'm going to have a dog" which is fine with me :)

I have had the same thing for years from my now 10 year old. She has researched so much she is a dog expert !I decided to foster a puppy from the SPCA to show my daugter how time consuming and hard work puppies are. We've had the puppy three weeks now and although both girls love her, they have realised how limiting it would be to have a dog. They have had to clean up all of the poo and wee too. They are really looking forward to being able to sleep in and not be woken by the puppy at 5.30am because she is ready to play!
