Hi all,

Looking at buying a car here in HK after 3 years without. What is the process for insurance in HK, is it compulsory like AU?

I was also wondering if someone could recommend any insurance companies? In particular one that offers a road side assistance type service.

Any other car related pitfall feel free to share.

Insurance is compulsory in HK, at least for a minimum of third party insurance. as for the process, find a car first, ask a broker for a quote (I know a broker who can find find quotes from the insurance companies and give you the best option), and then decide if you want to buy the car.

If you buy the car, the broker will get you a cover note which you then take to the Transport Dept with the Reg docs provided by the previous owner. Once registered you can then drive away.

Let me know if you want to speak to my broker guy.

Thanks. Do you know of any service about that will allow a mechanic to come check the car out for you?

Hi BigGuy, yes please. I expect I'll end up buying something from AsiaExpat classifieds. So I can't buy the car and drive it home before worying about insurance? Need a cover note first?

I'm not sure that the cost of the insurance will play a major role in the commercial decision. Compared to other countries (certainly the UK) car insurance in HK is very cheap. After all it's not as though you can go very far or very fast.

Make sure you have proof from your old co. back home confirming your NCD.

Insurance is compulsory and there are several companies and brokers that will insure for you. Insurance is cheap in HK, not just because of distances but also because in the event of a claim you do everything yourself, insurance here is just insurance, no bells or whistles as you may be used to elsewhere.

For checks you have the AA although the car will have to go to either their Wanchai or Kowloon test centres as well as several garages who'll check the car over for you. The AA also does roadside assistance. There are also car brokers here who will sort everything for you.
