Extending work visa for children to finish school year

we are in the position of having lost job and visa expiring in just over a month, the children attend a school. Is it possible to extend the visa so they can finish their school year. I have called immigration but over the phone they weren't very helpful and just said "if no job, no extension" and didn't really seem to think a special circumstance was possible..is it really that inflexible? Could we stay on as visitors without informing the school or is that a serious misdemeanor?

What the immigration guy said is correct, "no job, no extension". However, you can stay on with a visitor's visa if the Immigration Department grants you that. So just go there and apply for visa extension (from work visa to visitor's visa). Depending on your nationality, it can either be easy or tough.

The school need not know about your visa problems.

thanks for your reply, do you know if I can keep my helper too? she thinks she cannot work for us if we don't have work visa, and will get into big trouble if she does..?
