I have a daughter but her father and I broke up when I was 5 months pregnant. We weren't married so I want to know whether my child has the legal right to be financially supported. We cannot make compromises as his mother prevents us from speaking to each other. If I do have the right, do I apply for legal aid? Please add more information that could help. Thank you.

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.
You have to establish that the person from whom you seek maintenance for your daughter, is her father. This means that your daughter was born out of a union between her ‘father’ and you.
You may seek legal aid and it is given on the basis that you have no sufficient means under the ‘means’ test of the Legal Aid Department.
