Hi all,
I'm 27, from the UK, just been offered a job in HK. I'm basically looking to get some advice on whether my salary is liveable or not. Well, I know it's liveable but just trying to work out to what extent!
I've been offered £30,000HK/month. No relocation package or accommodation help, but there will be the potential for quarterly bonus (depends on various things, no idea how much it could be).
Just wanted some opinions really! If I go for it I need to work out how much of that I spend on accommodation (I know it's v expensive), and where abouts to live, though that's another question entirely.
Anyway, any advice would be helpful.
Thanks!

it is more then enough for someone like me

accommodation can be 8K HKD and higher depending on where you plan to live.
for a single person not more then 5K on food and travel

Well over HKD 300k per month, it is a pretty good salary for somebody aged 27. Leaving aside the obvious questions as to the integrity of the employer and so on, I would recommend getting some advice from a Hong Kong based accountant on packaging the salary.
A component for travel, and one for accommodation, would be a starting point. Also, what health insurance cover will your employer provide? If they do not provide anything, then I would probably put that into the mix.
But, even if you took it all in cash, and paid tax on the lot, you would still be able to live pretty well and save a lot of money - if you want to.

Perhaps you meant HKD30,000 per month?

Thank yu for contacting CAB. HKD 30,000 is a good salary, but on top of that you will hve to find approx. HKD l0,000 for accommodation, plus on month's deposit, and one month in advance. Look around Western/Cheung Wan/Aberdeen/ Tuen Wan, Tuen Muen, etc. You would hve to furnish this yourself. If you go to one of the islands, Lamma Island where the fetty service is good, or Discovery Bay, they rent would be cheaper, BUT you are at the vagaries of the ferry service, especially in Typhoon season. BUT all transportation is VERY VERY cheap.Tax at l5% would have to be paid on your salary, plus medical insurance, cost of a trip home each year HKD 7,-8,000 return ticket, Electricity with a/cs would be about $800 per month. You would probably have to buy aircons. at HKD 5,000 each X 2 - lounge and one bedroom. I would ask for a settling in allowance, otherwise your first 6 months money is taken up!!! Easting out is expensive, but the local food is not. If your contract is for more than 2 years, the initial costs can be overcome. People work hard here, and you will probbly be expected to work until 6-7 most nights, and Sat. mornings. Do call us when yo arrive, perhaps we can help 2815 5444 Community Advice Bureau. As a young British expat myself, I wouldn't live anywhere but on the island when you first arrive. You would want to be where all the action is and where your friends are likely to live.
Mid-levels and Sheung Wan are the most popular with Kennedy Town and Happy Valley coming a close second. I lived far out in the New Territories when I first arrived and i wouldn't recommend it.
Rent will be pricey but it's easy to find a flatshare.
HKD30k per month will be comfortable for you, if you have no family/dependants of course.

why is everyone saying HKD30k/month? OP said 30k GBP not HKD...

we'd need to know what sort of lifestyle you expect - do you have family? do you expect to drive (not on HK$30k)? do you want to eat and drink in swanky places?
