A bit weird question about HK buses.. :)

I'll start by saying I usually use the MTR, and not buses..

Yesterday I took a bus from Central to Repulse Bay (Bus number 6). The final stop of this bus is in Stanley, and the price was 7.90$.

From Repulse Bay to Central the price is 5.30$.

When the bus from Central got to the Repulse Bay stop, some people that got out there touched the Octopus thing again on their way out.

so my question is WHY?

We paid in Central... Why touching it again?

The only thing that came to my mind is that it may be some kind of refund or something because it should be cheaper than the Stanley stop...

your instinct is correct...some routes offer sectional fares where you must tap on exiting to correctly apply this fare..details are on the relevant bus company websites and on bus stop signs at which these routes stop.

I am always a bit confused about which bus does sectional fares and which doesn't.

I was told (and have followed, rightly or wrongly on the odd occasion I use a bus) that a bus with exit doors in the middle won't do sectional fares, but a bus with an exit at the front will.

Does anyone know if that is correct?

Thank you for contacting CAB. Yes, you are quite correct. By placing your Octupus card onto the meter when you leave, you are given a refund between Repulse Bay and Stanley, which you have alredy automatically paid on yur card when you entered.

Good luck next time. If you omitted to do this, then I am afraid you paid from Central to Repulse Bay, the price from Central to Stanley.

Regards CAB
